I am 77 and have lived here for17 years. I have had 5 major and different operations in the last 4 years which I have had to pay for myself as I have no health insurance because of

age. This has cost me over 2 million baht which has drained all my savings away.

Now I am having growing trouble with my eyes. I wear glasses all the time, but if I get in a draught or sit near a fan, I get very itchy eyes which I rub and which makes them worse. If I get out of the draught , the itchiness goes. But I think I need to see an eye specialist, because I can feel something in both my eyes, like bits of dust, which does not come when I am out of the airflow.

The purpose of this letter is to ask members for advice as to where to go in Pattaya for professional but cheap advice and help. I took my Thai wife to the Eye Specialist Clinic behind Big C, Pattaya Klang for help. He advised her to let him operate on the faulty eye at a huge expense. I had the money then !! She did some reading tests beforehand. After spending all this money with a doctor who also works in a major Pattaya Hospital, she had the operation. After recovery, she went back and took the reading test again. The change was virtually nil. I went to the leading Pattaya hospital for advice and they told .us both that the problem in my wife's eye was inoperable now and should have been done when she was very young.

I went back to the Eye Specialist with a recorder and demanded all the money back. He refused, said her sight had improved in his opinion and threatened to call the police.

So I want to know where I can go for urgent professional help, inexpensive.

Please NO stupidity I want serious help.

I would not use a clinic - you should see a medical doctor (ophthalmologist) - and that would not be expensive at all at government hospital. Even a private hospital should not charge that much for an exam.

You may have very dry eyes, as I have had, and indeed fan is not nice on them. In that case you might require artificial tears - which can be a bit expensive if "Vislube" as I was taking but expect that there are other options and until you have a good exam what is required is really not known.

Thanks for speedy reply. I already use eye drops and eye cream which help. I am just worried this is not solving the cause.

Can you recommend any of the hospitals that are economic with their charges here in Pattaya?

Do not live there but believe most are happy with the Navy hospital south of you - although believe they may charge a higher price than normal government hospital. In Bangkok Rutin Eye Hospital is considered a very good choice at a normal cost (not cheap but reasonable).
