CHA AM:-- A Thai man has been charged with murdering his Swedish neighbour in Cha Am, police announced on Saturday.

Pratheep Sangsiri, 42 told police he shot Lars Donald Qvarfordt, 64, after the Swede had insulted his family.

During his arrest, Pratheep was found to be in possession of an 11mm pistol and he later also tested positive for methamphetamine. A search of his house found two more shotguns and ammunition.

Mr Qvarfordt was a well known and a well liked member of the expat community in Cha Am and ran the Kennel Scandinavia dog kennels and cattery.

Investigating officer Pol Lt Gen Charnthep Sesawet said Pratheep was arrested after forensic officers found tyre skid marks at the scene which matched those with a pickup owned by the suspect.

Pol Lt Gen Charnthep said that Pratheep told them he murdered Mr Qvarfordt because he was angry with repeated insults and slandering the Swede allegedly made against his family.

Pratheep said that on July 17 he drove to Mr Qvarfordt’s house next to Kennel Scandinavia where he saw the Swedish man outside.

Pratheep then shot Mr Qvarfordt in the arm and as he tried to escape, Pratheep followed him into the house where he shot him a second time in the head before fleeing.

Police, who had earlier in the week promised swift action in the case, had originally said they believed a business or personal conflict were motives for the murder of Mr Qvarfordt.

On Saturday, police revealed that Mr Qvarfordt’s ex wife, whom he had divorced in 2009 had started a similar dog boarding business nearby and ever since there had been conflict between the two and other neighbours.

**sigh** unsure.png We are such a violent species.

"Mr Qvarfordt was a well known and a well liked member of the expat community..." Evidently not so well liked in the local national community. Still, the fellow should not have been killed for his relations with neighbours.

its the old Thai rage thing again, they just never think of their own censequences, (still i expect he will say "sorry") and be out of jail in no time. we see this every day though don't we, and he tested positive for drug abuse

Great photo op. Those English signs "Big gun" and "Small gun" and pixelated photo of "Accused" was certainly helpful for those farang who can't tell the difference between the size of guns and police and criminals (alleged).

They call Thailand the land of smiles, few however, realized that there's this raging anger and disregards

to any outcome behind those " smiles " we have seen it happening time and time again where Thais

loses their cool and unleash hell on anyone who perceived to slight and hurt their honor.....

"because he was angry with repeated insults and slandering the Swede allegedly made against his family". Probably called him a no-good loser Meth head; the truth hurts.

He might have just smiled instead of bowing to him when passing each other.

A Thai ice-head off his nut on ego. Doesn't take much. :(

wonder why they blurred out his face?

not convicted yet.......

There doesn't seem to be any standard so it may depend on the source of the photo as it's common to see burred and non-blurred people who are suspects and haven't been anywhere near a court.

Perhaps for various reason the police have input yet it's them who parade people for the media.

The Post says that the shooter used a shotgun in the attack and not a pistol.

It also stated the deceased had filed an assault complaint against a different neighbor and had domestic issues with his current gf.

Is it that wise for a farang to become so immersed into the Thai culture?

I am sure there are guys here who have done it successfully but it really seems like a tricky path to navigate.

What is it about these people that they can't handle an insult? It's words for %$ sake. In more sane countries and cultures, we realize that people get worked up and blurt things out or flip the bird. Then we reciprocate appropriately -- and that's not by getting a shotgun and blowing the person away, with the exception of some nut cases who do that. It seems the incidents of violence in Thailand have risen greatly over the past few years. Does that possibly indicate there are some very serious potholes in the road to happiness?

It just goes to show if you want to live long in Thailand, you must keep a low profile.

It's been said many times before:

Never get into an argument. with a Thai, male of female and never make them lose face by pointing out their mistake(s)

It may seem a coward's way of dealing with problems but the reality is there to see.

Faced with an angry Thai, the best solution is to smile and do a good wei wai2.gif and walk away and hope you don't get a knife or bullet in the back !

If there is an "accident" don't accuse anyone of wrong doing, just pay up with a smile and live.
