My son got in a bad accident (broken arm) at his international school in Phuket last week and had to get surgery and was in hospital for several days.

The school is saying they don't have any insurance to cover this and it's the parents responsibility even though it happened on their grounds while under their supervision.

My hospital bill is approx 200,000THB I have insurance but I don't have separate insurance for my son, I just though he would be covered by the school for some reason.

Does anyone know if I have options here or am i shit outta luck?

Thanks kindly.

Sorry to hear  about your sons accident.

surprising that an "international school"  doesn't have any insurance to cover its students !

If you have any credit or debit cards from Thai banks they will often include some insurance for whole family

... worth checking just in case.

if your son is Thai he could/should have been able to get treatment at a "normal hospital"  using he 30 baht health scheme

and even without being Thai treatment at the "normal" hospital is cheap.

All private schools I have heard of provide a limited accident insurance, even the cheap 10,000 baht per year ones. It is really surprising that the international school your son goes to doesn't have one. But... if they really don't have one, then there is nothing you can do, this is due diligence and I have never heard that accident insurance for pupils is mandatory

It could be that they have something generic that they don't communicate so send the school an email pretending to be a future customer and also ask if they provide accident insurance. Long shot but worth opening a dummy email account and sending an email

So how much money would an insurance have paid? Not 200,000 for sure! That is really a whole lot and you would be lucky if a Thai insurance even pay half of that. The Check-the-Thai-bank advice from John is good, they sometimes have insurance

On the positive side, you lost less than 100,000 by not having a Thai insurance

Quite a nasty break that. Most important thing is that your son will recover fully after all

Yes, the Thai government school I worked at had accident insurance for the students. Very surprised that an international school does not have basic accident insurance, even more surprised they're allowed to operate without.
