Climate, traffic Chiang Rai

Featured Replies

Considering a move to Chiang Rai from Khon Kaen. We like it here but it is just getting way too busy traffic wise and hot as for a large part of the year.

When its not hot its humid. About 3 months of nice weather, 3 or 4 months of 42-44 degrees hot every day and the rest about 35 degrees and humid.

Problem is still hot 9.00pm night time.

I'm sure CR has its hot season but to me it looks like Chiang Rai usually about 5 degrees cooler than here, particularly night time.

Does CR get humid for much of the time or only for the 3 months wet?

For example Pattaya is a lot cooler temperature wise than Isaan....but the constant humidity negates the cooler temps. I guess you could say the same about

Bangkok. 32 degrees and humid to me is as bad as 40 degrees and dry. I can only see this getting worse with climate change as will the traffic and congestion

with the growth of KK city. It's almost unpleasant to go anywhere here apart from the middle part of the day when people are at work. Just too much traffic, no

parking and congestion everywhere.

We lived in Chaiyaphum before and really liked the slower pace however there is a lack of farang facilities. I'm hoping CR will have the best of all worlds for us.

Other thing we miss is lack of any natural features....rivers, waterfalls, mountains etc where we are now.

Any advice appreciated but would particularly like to hear from people who have lived in Isaan or Khon Kaen particularly for a comparison.

From previous posts it appears you CR people don't like to advertise what a lovely area you are in so by all means PM me if you like :-)

Every place has it good points and not so good points.  Come see for yourself.  It's worth the trip.

I'm coming for a few days next week actually but hardly enough to get a handle on the year round climate

Great climate, except for the smoke in March and April.

I've visited Chiang Rai twice over several months these last two years and must say it is my favourite area of Thailand, or at least what I have seen of Thailand so far.

Only downside (or main one) is the burning season ... I had some experience of it in Chiang Mai this year and it is thoroughly unpleasant, and not conducive to your health. Poster above stated March and April, but I believe it can last a great deal longer than two months.

How bad is that smoke? Mrs seems to think its awful from what shes seen on the news. Is it every day? Is it so bad you don't go out too much?

It doesn't seem to bother the locals.  Some visitors wear a mask.
