Don't be too excited.

Which of the xx threads about this "soon to come" ferry dated from 2005, 2009 to 2016 do you want to read?

It resurfaces like the monster of Loch Ness.

Like this from 2009:

Hi Team

Anyone have the latest on the new Pattaya/Hua Hin ferry ? When it's due to start etc ?

Believe it when you see it.

Nobody has an idea how such a project could make a profit.

What Google says:

for a short period there was a ferry to Cha-Am (was it that katamaran?).

Closed in 2011.

In 2015 the transport minister has visited the construction site?

A Potemkin construction site I guess

To be ready in 2020, a feasibility study until end of this year.

Guess what the outcome will be :whistling:

There have been a couple of companies who have tried this over the years, it never lasts, there is just no call for it

Darren, what has been the reason why those companies have ending up dead end road? Financial? meaning cost of operation, ticket etc....??

or just simple they did not have passengers?

what did they charge for ticket price?

I been by my self at sea 32yrs and i'm Maritime Safety specialist and yes i have followed thai ferry tragedies every time when it happen as i live in here 20yrs.

So i'm very interested what is happening there as it will be something what can be good or what can be very bad....So would be interesting to hear what kind of jetty or Pier they are planning to build as that give indication what kind of ferry they are planning to operation,,

I been checking in in hua hin forum including hua hin tourist information desk as well and only get answers from there what is referring to newspapers, not a single update in public as now days public will play big part of it, IF public will talk as politicians have no idea what public would like if they don't talk...

For me a couple of reasons why it failed

Cost, 1500 one way if I remember right, to expensive for most Thais who would rather pay less than 400 on the minibus, 3000 baht for a return trip is not cheap for either Thais or Farangs

3 hours travelling time one way, minibus 4.5 hours, not all that much difference

The kind of people who visit Hua Hin are not the kind of people who visit Pattaya and vice versa

There are just not enough people in Hua Hin (Population 100,000?) who would make the journey to make it a viable operation

That would buy about 60 liter of Diesel fuel.

With that you could transport 5 persons about 900 km.

That price would be higher than many one-way domestic flights.

With such a price it would not be a competitive way of transport.

A tourist attraction at beast with which the nr. of pax is too meager.

One of the more recent proposals was for multiple (more than a dozen?) trips each direction between HH and Pattaya.  Actually, the "Hua Hin" port was moved a couple times, the last proposal being about a 40 minute drive to the north of the city, in the middle of no place.

There was actually a triangular route map with three ports:  Hua Hin, Pattaya and Bangok (somewhere near the airport, I think?)

Yep, these things are well investigated and planned.

Yes another good point why it has failed in the past, another 30-40 minutes added to the journey time if you live in HH making the whole journey around 3.5 hours

@Sphere:  Such an elaborate video!  After it was made, they changed the "Hua Hin" port from Pranburi (which is south of HH, but at least it's a city) to some random place in the sticks north of HH.

Wonder how the farang hostess and bartender got their work permits?  :whistling:

I think you have all the replies you will need on that topic. Suffice it to say the last attempt which was I believe was the Thai Living Ferry office on Thrappaya Road, Jomtien.   I heard that the crossing was far rougher and more dangerous than would be expected in an area of water like the Gulf of Thailand.  As one poster said the commercial idea keeps getting resurrected and then it all fizzles out only to be raised again years later.

Although a couple of years back there was these Russian Bank robbers who almost made it to Hua Hin or Koh Samui using a stolen speed boat if I remember correctly.....
