A lady that lives just  around the corner from us has just 'collared me' and asked about what tyres to buy.

She was at a Toyota garage today and he pointed out the date on her tyres ... I couldn't see the date as it's dark but the vehicle is just over four years old , has covered 58Kms and been kept undercover when not in use. To me there still seems ample tread. They want replacing??

She doesn't go off road  ... So what are you Fortuner guys, or others fitting these days please...What is a Ball Park figure. I would be tempted to go to B-Quick for them

How new would you expect 'new tyres' to be ... ie build date ...I don't want her to save a few Baht by buying year old or whatever tyres.

Thanks

Probably no need to replace them as yet.  Garages are always trying to extract more money some how.   Globally there must be billions spent on new parts replacing good parts.  Go have a look at the tyres during the day.   If there is no damage, reasonable tread depth or unusual wear tell her to keep them.

The US tire industry claims 5 years is the normal 'shelf life' for tires so with a 4-year-old 'tuna, unless she has already unwittingly changed the OEM tires to even older ones, i would think it unlikely that she has tires that are much older than the vehicle itself. Having said that, the 2011 floods caused major disruption in local car manufacturing, assembly and associated supplies so maybe re-check the manufacture date after the sun is up? It's a 4-digit code where the first 2 digits are the week of manufacture and the last two digits are the year.

Totally agree. Even if the tires are older than 5 years, if she doesn't go offroad, drive hard and fast and the tires don't have sidewall damage, cracks and still have decent tread, she can probably get another 20k km or 2 years tops out of them.

They'll be Duellers on her Fortuna and after 4 years will be hard and offer poor grip. If she can afford Michelins then she should get them.

We replaced ours at 73000 and you could really feel the difference the new rubber made.  We got the same make and model which came with the fortuner and made sure the manufacture date was less than six months.  I believe the price was around 10000 baht, but can't remember the exact figure.

The last set of thai Michelins lasted us only two years and 30,000 km. I complained but they said that was normal. Tried the Dunlap's this time as I didn't want to give them the business and besides they were slightly less expensive and could not possibly perform any worse. Unfortunately, they don't make the BF Goodrich all terrain in my rim size as those are imported and least longer/handle better on and off road than the locally made crap.

Have had Michelin before and like you wore out quick. Didn't like their grip in the rain either.

Have now change my Spivo ones from B/Stone to Nitto Japanese tires, mainly because didn't have B/St in stock and price had them well over 18 months 20thkm and still look like new also preformed well.

Price difference 29thBt for 4 Nitto NT420s. B/St over 40thbt. Both prices included 500bt per tire discount for the old ones.

I would recommend changing at 6 years. Unless there is something wrong with them IE tread/walls. My B/St were still only half worn nothing wrong at 6 years 75thkm.

Yes. They're good, safe tyres. Bad tyres are hard and last for years and offer poor grip.

I would not have Michelin's again if they were free, look good but the carcasses fail and they go egg shaped and fall apart, absolute crap, Bridgestones never a problem in my experience.
