I've upgraded 4 Windows 7 machines to Windows 10, and have spent many sleepless nights sorting out problems. A couple of my machines were in need of a clean re-install, so I took up the free upgrade offer as an option to see how they ran. The Anniversary update caused the most drama.

If your Windows 7 machines are going well, I'd recommend leaving them alone.

I only took up one free 30-day trial of Win10 on the 64-bit machine which would be the cleanest machine in that it doesn't have loads of programs and utilities and does minimal netsurfing. However, I kept getting spontaneous black screens that could only be resolved with a hard reset so after the third blackout in as many weeks, I happily rolled back to Win7 and ignored the 'offer' on other machines. Quite happy to stay with 7. If I need to buy a new machine, then a clean Win10 installation will be the option as apparently that has much lower mortality than the patchwork free upgrades.
