Driver nods off leaving 44 students injured as bus overturns in Kamphaeng Phet

KAMPHAENG PHET: -- Forty four students returning to Bangkok from a camp in Chiang Mai were injured when the driver fell asleep at the wheel in Kamphaeng Phet.

 

Driver Bankert Bunjan, 42, said he had left Bangkok Tuesday to go and get the students. On Wednesday afternoon he reached the camp and immediately drove back to Bangkok, reports Daily News.

 

The accident occurred in the early hours of this morning on Pahonyothin Road in the Ang Thong sub-district.

 

He told police he fell asleep at the wheel before colliding with a roadside souvenir sop and overturning. The bus ended up on its side.

 

Most of the students suffered bruising to legs, arms and faces. None was seriously hurt. They were all taken to Kamphaeng Phet Hospital.

 

The driver was detained for further questioning.

Morons these drivers are and the government does  not do a thing to correct it. 

He was so sound asleep, he didn't even notice his brakes failing. 

As moronic as he is! the company should have provided 2 drivers for this distance  but no that's too expensive and very probably the school wanted the cheapest (not the safest option)

Thankfully they were only injured and none of them were killed. 

Still, with foresight, totally avoidable. 

 

As Poohy says 2 drivers should be allocated to a journey of this duration necessitating a quick turn-round. There appears to be no legislation regulating drivers' hours in Thailand; maybe because it would be pointless. The wages are so low that even if driving hours on PCVs and HGVs were regulated, a lot of the drivers would spend rest periods driving taxis/taxi bikes.

I wonder if the insurance company would pay out as the driver has confessed to falling asleep from long hours driving.

Bus crash injures 47 Bangkok students

 

 

KAMPHAENG PHET: -- A chartered bus taking about 50 students of King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang on the way back from Chiang Mai to Bangkok crashed into a roadside barrier and overturned, injuring all students on board.

 

Four were in serious condition while the rest were slightly injured.

 

According to police, the bus is among four chartered buses which were carrying about 160 students back to Bangkok from Chiang Mai after completing a voluntary programme.

 

The incident happened at about 3.00am on Phahonyothin highway in Kamphaeng Phet province.

 

The bus driver Bancherd Boonchan admitted he lost control of the bus after he fell asleep briefly.

Wow, I'm surprised he didn't state that the brakes had failed. He must have still been half asleep in order to have forgotten that excuse. But good on him for at least being honest.

At least he admitted the truth and didn't blame it on faulty brakes. And he didn't do a runner.

Thailand trust the young in the hands of people who just don't give a #%€£!
I bet, the driver ran multiple shifts, had a M150 and a Birdy and was declared fit to drive!

yesterday the Prime Minister expressed concern about road safety although not a murmur from the transport Minister who surely is responsible for this daily carnage. If it's not a bus it's a minivan day in day out and they can see what it takes by looking at NCA bus company who always has 2 drivers on its overnight routes.

So they are putting cost above safety

Most of these buses do hav 2 drivers maybe even this one.

Until such time as Hi So's or the military are victims of these bus crashes nothing will happen.

Would have been longer but the crash woke him up.

Sounds like a ya ba deficiency to me. 

I heard that in some countries they use things called tachographs ( not sure of the spelling ).

 

Apparently these are inexpensive pieces of kit designed to stop drivers of commercial vehicles from being <deleted> driving too fast or too long. It would be shame if they were introduced here, the number of daily news stories like this would plummet.

So it wasn't his fault ,he fell asleep ,that's his exscuse thinking that means he's still a good driver ,cretin .

Surely 2 drivers for a CM to BKK route overnight??

Never ceases to amaze me how many bus accidents occur here in Thailand.

Thank god the kids are ok.

When will they learn

 

The owners, not drivers, of the busses need putting in jail on the first death

 

On the second they should be executed

 

Tachometers should be mandatory

 

Probably the only way to stop this very regular carnage 

The Thai government should build more mortuaries.

1 example of the "value" of a life, or lack of it.

Most of them get cremated, soon after meeting their demise.

I've said it several times but this govt, having no opposition and article 44 at their disposal could reduce the carnage on the roads in double quick time.

Tachographs are fitted to most commercial vehicles in the Europe, moreover in some countries, a driver can be prosecuted for speeding just based on the  Tacho record as it records speed accurately. Of course people do dream up ways to fiddle them but overall, yes, they do keep drivers from attempting to drive ridiculous hours.
