Thai Air Force awaits answers on fatal Gripen crash

Maybe they are needed to keep this big boy company.

The Royal Thai Air Force has acquired an A340-500 from Thai Airways International  as part of a THB1.745 billion (USD49.18 million) package.

The deal included an extra Trent 553-61 motor, aircraft spares and paint. In addition, Thai will provide the Air Force with the necessary mechanic, pilot and cabin crew training needed to operate the aircraft.

Nearly bust Elgardo38 budget before they start.

As subscribed to by Hitler and Tojo?

No by all European government, US government

Si vis pacem, para bellum is one of basis for the concept of armed peace.
The expression of armed peace derives from the doctrine that military force is the first or principal guarantee to maintain peace

Peace through strength

For your two idols that you quote, their goal was too far of Végèce philosophy

One more recent example being the Colt 45 "Peacemaker" which killed more people than one would care to count.

Prior to December 1941 the US didn't perceive a certain country as a threat and its military was in a hell of a state. That follows on into your final sentence as well.

The rest, as they say, is history. Some will say it is nothing to do with this situation but it is a perfect example of not being prepared.

China's expansionism and construction of routes throughout Asia, whilst perceived as good intent, are there for the benefit of China. One can drive from China straight through Laos to Thailand now- couldn't happen a few years back.

Also look at the bitching over the South China Sea at present- you can't say that is not significant and couldn't spill over.

I apologise for the thread drift.

The Pearl Harbour comparison doesn't really work since Japan was known to be a very real potential enemy by the US.Certainly it was an attack that caught the US napping (ignoring the conspiracy theorists) but that's a different matter.

As to China, the Thai establishment already regards the country as a vassal state so in the highly unlikely event of a direct threat the inevitable kowtowing response would be surrender - however powerful the Thai military was at that time. And in the comically unlikely event in this hypothetical scenario the Thai Establishment developed a backbone, defeat against such massive resources would be inevitable.

There aren't many spirited countries that will take on a giant neighbour in war.Finland was one but Thailand definitely isn't.

The Armed Forces and the Police have one main job, to protect the ruling class from the poor masses.

All of the arms big buys are an opportunity for the Generals to get rich, it's their reward for being willing to turn the guns on their own people when the population  get sick of living like they do in a society where  a few people can do whatever they want cos they are wealthy and are virtually unaccountable  for any crimes committed,

Thai prisons were not built for the rich.

Thais are brainwashed from birth to bow and crawl to people of immense wealth and privilege, they are scared of the Police who are supposed to be there to help them, but all they do is extort money from the poorest members of society and keep them firmly in their place, whilst the rich and influential get a free pass.

Laws are made to keep it like this, and the population can't do a thing about it. ( See above )

It stinks.

Aptly put. Here is a like if I forgot to give you one. Same thing more subtly done elsewhere. We are the pawns on he chess board of life.

Just make him an honorary air force general and leave it at that.

I heard a rumor that there's some country out there that has a doggie as one of their Air Force senior officers....

But it's just a rumor, of course.

According to many comments made on the social media, pilot error seemed to be the cause of the tragic crash. Just saying, Rip to the pilot.

Well those posting on social media would know!!!

And why does Thailand need one of the strongest air forces in the region? Meanwhile poverty reigns among majority of the Thai population.

With the military in control, they don't give a hoot for the poorer members of the population. They are even about to waste more money on Submarines   .....WHY ?

So they need these planes to bomb red-shirts? Politicians? Students?

Makes sense.

Wonder if these have been grounded, pending the results of the investigation

Maybe time to hang a few extra amulets off the mirror? And a relic for the dash.

I am a tiny bit fed up with Thai media hammering on the Gripen. Yes, it was in a Gripen the pilot crashed, but insisting heavily on the machine, to me, it's as if one wants to distract the attention from a possible error from the pilot. The pilot was Thai, the jet Swedish, the reason could be as simple as that. We even had here some US posters maligning the Gripen, comparing it to top-notch, double priced, newer USAF twin reactors planes, others telling the RTAF should better have bought Russian SUs (while I'd say Thailand didn't need any)... That there must have been big brown envelopes involved in the purchase makes, alas, as little doubt as any other stuff bought by Thai authorities, as has been more recently shown, again. The Gripen in itself is a very good, single reactor, multi purpose jet, which would have been a commercial succes story when not for the politics which are, way too, dominant in the purchase of military equipment. N.B.: I am not a Swede!

I would be much more interested to hear what Saab make of everything but the recorder data.

Unlikely given that they would probably like more custom from the RTAF.

'Enoon': ...What Saab won't get from the RTAF! Expecting anything 'genuine' from any Thai authority, especially when there might be some tiny 'issue' on their side? What about the crashed plane's service and maintenance logbook, ...for what it's worth here? A sample from the same kerosene tank used to fill up that specific Gripen might have been usefull too, na-ah, forget it. Same as what kind of acrobatic maneuvers the pilot executed, most probably not recorded...

The RTAF seems to have no doubts about their Gripens' safety though, as yesterday they made a lot of unwanted noise above touristic Samui and Pha Ngan (at least two of them), as usual before the crash, as if they have no other places to fly their birds... One might wonder whether the RTAF doesn't care a bit about the holydaying tourists who, definitely, consider the loud noise of 'practising' jets a nuisance on a paradise island, or, even worse, might the RTAF live in the illusion 'the people' on the ground do love to hear them frolicking above their heads...?

Pose value - they're an air force, that's what they do...
