BANGKOK: -- The city administration will seek cooperation from motorcycle taxis in Bangkok to help it clamp down on motorcycle riding on sidewalks.

Deputy governor of Bangkok Metropolitan Administration Pol Lt Gen Amnuay Nimmano said the call was raised following survey of sidewalk traffic showed most violators are motorcycle taxis.

Therefore the city administration would seek their cooperation to help clamping down the illegal riding of motorcycles, he said.

Moto taxi are the violaters. So makes perfect sense to ask the perps to report themselves?

Get a crook to catch a crook - HA!. And from our friendly Mafia run motor taxi drivers. Gang warfare. The worst perpetrators. Just get the BMA to arrest a few motor taxi drivers and they may get enough publicity to show they are serious thus warning other offenders that they can also be targeted - and I hope to Hell they are.

And what happened to the fare's board they are suppose to put up listing

all the destinations and fares? was on show for couple of weeks and now

no more, better yet, how about insuring the pillion riders and make sure

that both driver and motorcycle are fit to be on the road.. Nah... too hard...

Yes typical Thai logic.

Why not crush their bikes and fine them another 20k?

A minor problem in a big mess.

I guess that depends on your perspective.

A farang expat was rundown and killed by a motorcyclist riding on the sidewalk a while back. I'm guessing, you wouldn't consider it a "minor problem" if you were the one who died as a result.

Here's a sign they've put up along lower Sukhumvit lately. I've yet to see any motorcyclist being cited as yet for riding on the sidewalks, which happens all the time in that area. And, I've yet to see any Thai police anywhere out on the street actually enforcing or even watching for that offense.

Although, looking at the ID info at the bottom of the banner, it appears to be coming from the BMA and the local district office, and not the RTP.  But in the same vein, never seen the BMA Tessaban officers (the 2000b fine for littering guys) ever stop a sidewalk motorcyclist either. They often seem to be gone from their little booths by the time the evening rush hours roll around.

In typical Thai fashion, I noticed the BMA presumably has also lately installed some closely spaced iron posts along the sidewalk at the corner of Sukhumvit and Asoke near the Exchange Building, apparently designed to prevent motorcyclists from riding through there. So of course, the motorcyclists just go around those into the street and then back up onto the sidewalk to continue their journey. :post-4641-1156694572:

motocy taxi's, real taxi's, minivans they all are big friends with the police and can do as they please.

We have a lane for turning left but minivans always stand there waiting for the red stoplight blocking the lane for many cars who want to go left. Even when the police is there on the junction they won't tell the minivans to keep that lane free, instead they invite them to come on the junction infront of all waiting cars..

All the problems in BKK are caused by the lack of police.

Suuure, they will turn themselves in. They're the worst offenders - and for a reason.

With every problem solving situation, you must attack the problem at the root: people use the footpaths because the roads are too crowded. Tackling the problem at the source would imply:

- Raising import tax on vehicles

- Implement an odd-even number system

- Be more strict on buses stopping in the middle lane

- Tow cars who park in a way that blocks traffic

- Etc.

When riding my motorcycle, I always try to use the street - but when it's too crowded and I have a boiling hot engine between my legs and the sweat is pouring in my shirt, I can guarantee you that I won't wait in the traffic. The sidewalk is large enough.

As for those motorcycle taxis, you can't reasonably expect them to make money without either scrapping a huge part of their clientele by jacking prices, or using "shortcuts" to save time and money.
