So Pattaya is the sex capital of the world...tell us something we don't know, say online Thais

Thais have reacted to a story in The Mirror UK about "Sin City" Pattaya with a resounding message: So what? Tell us something we don't know!

The Mirror screamed in its online editions that the resort was known as "The Sex Capital of the World and "Sin City" with what they said were 27,000 prostitutes or what they claimed was one in five of the entire female population, reported Thai Rath.

They even repeated the often heard slogan among it's annual one million male visitors as "Good guys go to heaven, bad guys go to Pattaya".

But Thais commenting on the story from England reacted with a shrug of the shoulders and a resounding "so what?".

While many posters accepted that the image of the resort was hardly angelic, they also said that it was not the only place in Thailand where you could buy sex. Or for that matter certainly not the only place in the world.

Some said the people in the UK should look no further than their own back yard to see a seedy sex town.

Commenting on the Thai Rath report of the Mirror story Niraphat Aey said this was hardly news: "Pattaya is not the only place - the sex industry is everywhere in Thailand north to south!"

Tan Pera said: "Everyone knows this! It is not just Pattaya. And it's not just sex. Pattaya is a mafia town with crime of all sorts too!"

Prapawee Kob Underwood said: "They (The Mirror) go on like this trade doesn't exist in England. Chinatown (Soho) has seedy sex shops, gay clubs and sex for sale everywhere. What's the big deal? Sex is for sale all over the world".

The Mirror also referred to a Thai government minister who they said had promised last year that she wanted to oversee the end of the sex trade in Thailand. This was clearly a reference to Khun Kobkarn Wattanvarankul of the tourism and sports ministry who made the pronouncements last July.

It has come as no surprise to Thais online or elsewhere that there has been no change to the sex industry in Pattaya or elsewhere since the minister made those remarks.

Here is things you don't know about Pattaya, ( or don't want to know ) the rudest and the worst kind

of Thai people lives there,

Pattaya is a huge hub for international criminals, thriving lady boys,

lots and lots of drugs everywhere you look, police that mostly turn a

blind eye to most petty crimes, Pattaya has the nastiest and mafia

like taxi service, Pattaya is badly overcrowded to the point of traffic stand

still in many places, and Pattaya is all about the money, money and money,

forget about amazing Thailand and the smiling Thai people, non of it there

any longer....

Its always good to get a first hand account from someone who "lives" in pattaya.

As if there is no sex trade in the UK. Typical tabloid trash. However, now that the 'discovery' of Pattaya has been made public, THIS will surely raise tourist arrivals to new records. TAT should thank this piece-of-trash tabloid for this 'news'. Onwards now TAT - prepare that release and holding statement about how tourist numbers have hit new records. Again.

i'm assuming Kob Underwood was last in soho and chinatown 20+ years ago, suggest he checks his facts so as not to look like an uninformed idiot.

But Thais commenting on the story from England reacted with a shrug of the shoulders and a resounding "so what?"

These are probably the same people who raised havoc and forced universities to dismantle condom vending machines to protect their kids

Pattaya government should have The Mirror charged with liable.....  Is there sex in Pattaya? yes, is there lots of it? yes.... but the story goes on into subjective rather than straight factual reporting by saying it is the capital.... which was only meant to damage the reputation of Pattaya..... so it should have been see you in court.... and your writers will be arrested if they come to Thailand :shock1:
