PHUKET: -- A Russian tourist spent two nights in jail for feeding fish at Koh Racha before paying 100,000 baht bail to be released from a holding cell at Phuket Provincial Court yesterday.

Her passport has been held by the court and she is not permitted to leave the country until after her case is tried in court. Her initial hearing is on March 6.

Olga Smirnova, 53, was arrested by Marine and Coastal Resources Department (DMCR) officers at Koh Racha Yai on Sunday and was later taken to Chalong Police Station.

“We allowed for her to be released on bail the same day that she was arrested. However, she could not raise the required amount of 100,000 baht, so she had to stay in the holding cell at the police station for two nights,” Lt Sakarin Sangjaroen of Chalong Police admitted to the Phuket Gazette.

best advertizing for tourism in Thailand ever !!

keep it up!

maybe the boss of the Ministry of Tourism will see that she's got some more urgent work to do than a crusade against sin, lol.

Good to see the B.I.B. clamping down on the serious crimes here, makes it safer for the tourists !

Thais are clever. They say.

So this incident cannot be caused by stupidity.

Logic conclusion:

They want to finish with tourism. Thailand to the Thais only.

Let them reap what they sow

Hang on a minute, was eating the fish or feeding them? I don't think she'd

be in trouble had she ate a fish... and why so harsh? most penalties in Thailand

for more serious crimes are only few tens of thousands of baht?....

I wonder if a Thai person would have to pay that much in bail to get out or even charged.

this is beyond logical thinking get this stupidity out there.

Drunk driving in Pattaya, bail 20'000 to 40'000 Baht, 10'000 fine.

Feeding fish, bail 100'000 Baht.

They are cracking up :shock1:

Are there signs on the beaches in the regulated areas warning people about the  prohibition? How are tourists expected to know about the issue?

Ahhh they have invented a new way to milk more money from all their quality tourists, crafty.

Absolutely disgusting  I hope this gets the worldwide media attention it deserves.

Maybe she can go work with the anti booze crusader at the  VD department.

Everybody really should spread the word on social media, tell the world about wonderful Thailand and its laws

She hasn't received any penalty yet, she has to appear in court first for that to happen.

Probably not, they're much less likely to do a runner and leave the country, don't you think?

Might not be that easy as the court is holding the passport!

I don't think that drunk drivers in Pattaya potentially do that much damage to coral reefs.

No, would be less.  Just as the flight risk would be.

The Thai's can cover the sea floor with garbage, factory discharges, filth and rotted sewage which would deny natural food sources for the fish but that's OK.

But they are a potential threat to health and live of other humans.

No, that's not ok, everything that you referred to are offences also that are prosecuted.
