Washer theory... I need help

Featured Replies

I always get washers wrong when I don't have an example to follow. Somehow the nuts get loose and things vibrate apart.

Now I am about to mount a pump and a 270 cc motor onto a homemade frame and I will need to know which washers to use and in which order and where.

So there are 4 holes in the bottom of the cast iron pump structure. One in each corner. There will be corresponding holes in the frame I am attaching it to. And on the pump itself there is place to mount the engine which also has four holes.

I expect to need 8 bolts obviously, but how many washers and where? How can I keep it from vibrating apart?

Yes I know I should know this stuff, I think I was absent the day they taught everybody else.

bolt > Flat washer> frame> engine> flat washer> spring washer> nut.

But if frame does not have crush tubes you will not be able to torque the nuts to spec as the frame will crush.

Does anyone know if you can get nylock nuts here.

As don mega days but nylocks ensure they won't vibrate off.

Failing that some Loktite thread seal should suffice.

Nylocks are available, I buy them at hardware house.

But remember they are single use only, if re-used they do not "lock" the same as a virgin nylock.

The frame won't crush. It will be flat iron to flat iron. no tubes

Thanks for your quick help.

I was raised before the days of Nyloc washers and seemed to survive, use longer bolts sufficient to use double nuts, the second or the upper nut can be a half nut (probably not available in Thailand) - so, bolt thru' the frame, motor foot, flat washer, nut - correctly torqued- then second nut tightened and torqued onto the lower nut.

If you want the ultimate, used castellated nuts correctly torqued and with a split-pin thru the nut and bolt.

Yep, used to run 'pigs' thru pipelines. Single centre bolts holding pig rubbers together that's what we used, castelled nuts and split pins. A pig coming apart in a pipeline wouldn't have been good.

impressive vid Crossy, Have used nord locks in the past and they are the shizzle.

You mean like the guys who did our gates, BEFORE adjusting the hinges so the gates actually opened?

I thought one of the guys looked familiar but couldn't quite place him ...

Never seen that before, very impressive!

Here's a technique we used on helicopters.  They do some serious vibration.

Great video Crossy, leaves my nuts looking poorly :cheesy:

I wouldn't knock it too much...the design was suitable for the intended purpose which was to please the crowd...with a parachute to boot, hurrah!

hey, man...dose those mothers with superglue and then it'll take dynamite to shake 'em loose...

we useta do that with surfboard car roof racks in California where carpark thievery was always a problem...

If the bolt is long enough, after you torque down the nut, put another nut on and torque it down against the first one.

I'm sure his would have Rolls Royce engines on it.

A dab of the wifes fingernail polish on the thread will get you out of trouble if nothing else is readily available.
