BANGKOK — A pedestrian was killed and two were injured after they were hit by a hotel tuk-tuk Tuesday morning in what police are chalking up to an accident.

A tuk-tuk belonging to the Centre Point Hotel hit three people at about 9:30am in the hotel’s driveway on Soi Sukhumvit 10. Chinnawat Pilachai died at the scene while two friends with him were severely injured and taken to nearby hospitals, Supakorn Sangklub of Lumphini police said.

Yet the Australian Jetski incident was manslaughter !

Bizarre.

Fast enough to kill whilst in the hotel driveway?

The full article does mention a malfunction in the vehicle's "choke" which one could read as a stuck throttle. What's the betting it mysteriously fixed itself in the impact?

...the vehicle lost control and struck the three pedestrians....

Lt. Supakorn said by phone the fatal crash stemmed from a malfunction of the tuk-tuk’s choke.

That was quick.

Do tuktuk's have a choke in Thailand? It's always hot in BKK, don't need a choke.

But this thing is not a tuktuk or can we call any similar trike a tuktuk these days? To me it looks like a cheapo indian tuktuk.

I also stayed in a 6* hotel which transported me in a ridiculous vehicle (for free) to the main road....why do they think quality tourists like to sit in a ridiculous thing like that? Nothing was of decent quality on it.

Contrary to what the article says, it wasn´t in the hotel´s driveway but in the middle of the Soi when it happend. It crashed into the group of 3 people  and came to a halt at the entrance of one of the car parks along the Soi. It wasn´t a nice view indeed :-(((((

Tuktuks have chokes because they are all very old and refurbished, perhaps new ones don't but I've seen many old ones do

a three wheel vehicle in similar conditions are all called tuktuks in thailand

Why did you sit on the ridiculous thing and complain about the ride?Just get a taxi and pay if you are not satisfy with the free ride they provide? I think tuktuks are a "fun" experience for tourists, hence many hotels and service apartment use it, and also its more economical to run.

The TUT lost control, and first hit a taxi driver, who was at his seat and taxi desk. It then hit the security guard at Siri on 10 Condo, and the other fatality was a passenger going to Centre-point where the TUT belonged. This happened 200 yards away from Centre-point NOT at their driveway as stated. I see this vehicle every day, and never seen going quick, but some days overloaded. RIP all 3 deceased, and prayers to families.

Well, that´s not how I saw/perceived the accident and I was maybe less than 10 meters away from it walking on the other side of the Soi when the Tuk Tuk crashed into the 3 people. But that´s irrelevant now...... The point is that 2 of the 3 survived. But RIP the taxi driver. What a horrible way to pass away. His head injuries were truly horrendous. :-(((

One fatality, not three!

Because i didn't know the hotel was in a dead street far from the centre of pattaya. Also there are no taxi's in that street and the driver already drove that thing to the entrance when he saw us coming out.

On the way back to the hotel we waited at the pickupplace for that thing while there was a beggar sleeping on the bench which was put there by the hotel for guests like us.

But in Pattaya taxi's won't use the meter and the bahtbuses will cheat us so we took the ride in that thing. The doors in that thing couldn't even be opened from the inside, the driver had to do it outside. I think that's very dangerous in case of an accident.

I wonder what 6 star hotel you are talking about in Pattaya, I don't recall seeing any. Not to mention you claiming that they put a beggar at the pick up place, ridiculous claim.

I agree taxis don't use meters even for Thais, and baht bus do cheat. But if you know how to take the baht bus, you can avoid being cheated.

It was http://at-bangkok.com/virtualtours/capedara/pattaya.html

Now where did i claim they put a beggar at the pickup place? Why would any hotel put a beggar on their bench which is placed there by the hotel for THEIR GUESTS??

Of course that beggar went there by herself and didn't give a duck about paying customers or that she's ruining the reputation of Pattaya even more.

For a hotel like this i expect a decent vehicle to transport their guests....not some made in India tuktuk kind of thing.

Your post #13 - you said it. Unless you meant to say the pick up place is put beside the beggar on purpose? Either way doesn't make sense.

I've been to that place, its definitely not a 6 star hotel. But 5 star which is close enough and the car they use to transport guest was a japanese Suzuki Carry Truck converted - pretty safe I would say, so not even close to a Tuk tuk. But perhaps they have upgraded or they have two types of transport.

They had several tuktuk-things to transport their guests...i felt ashamed in that thing and also felt ashamed to stand waiting for it next to a beggar who was sleeping on the bench which was put their for hotelguests.

It's a nice hotel though, great breakfast and all is very clean. It only should be closer to the rest of beachroad or have a way to walk to beachroad over the beach.
