It is called the law. You probably didn't expect it. But yes, it does get enforced occasionally.

The only law in Thailand is the Law of Brown Envelope

Yeah but they're not the one complaining. It's mostly the unawares tourists who are complaining, either due to a lack of informations or to a misunderstanding of Thai culture

Sure you'll always have a few "bad apples" if you can say that. But the few people you know are not representative of the whole Thai population.

its common knowledge that the Police accept bribes for illicit businesses to operate

Although the Army has clamped down on corruption in certain areas and the clamp down will probably spread to other areas in the future .

Its just that some posters on TV feel that they are being insightful and "in the know" when they mention about "brown envelopes"

Why are they "bad apples", they work hard and like to unwind. How do you know how may people I know and if they are not representing the Thai population?

Bad Apple is an expression, might not be appropriate in this case I give you this. But no matter how many ppl you "know" they won't be representative of the Thai population. It's common sense

thailand is not really a 24/7 party destination like it may have been at one time.

even bars in pattaya are closing at 1:00 am these days.

your likely holding on to a nostalgic view of old movies and backpacker stories of yhe otient that were popular in the 70's and 80's

Quite wrong, closing times are much more lax than they were during the Thaksin years. And Pattaya closes an hour or two later than Bangkok.

Or because the locals are having an election and so no-one is allowed alcohol, even tourists. Or the authorities want to have a show of force for no reason other than they can and descend on a nightlife area at any time they choose and close everything down.

Just curious - does any other country in the region close down bars etc when there is a religious holiday or an election or when the police just want to bully people?

In Ireland bars shut early evening on Christmas Eve and reopen on Boxing Day in the early evening and also close on good Friday
The sale of alcohol is also banned on election days

This forum has a lot of self righteous people. Wow. Its just going out for a drink in a normal nightlife environment, just like any other country.

I signed up just to comment on this. Apparently Khao San has been closing at 12 for 2+ weeks now. It started after the underage drinking and drugs situation at a bar off Khao San, and the firing of the police. Now they roll through with military and police closing everything at 12. Seems like the current government is set on destroying any cheaper Bangkok nightlife scene for young people and pushing everything towards the same 'upscale' faux Singapore model. Ban street food - check. Shut down cheaper and more relaxed nightlife - check.

Khao San is mostly younger locals and backpackers and is a vibrant part of the city. The moralism of a forum which is basically half devoted to sex tourism is ridiculous.

Yes, it takes time to throw off the shackles that religiously inspired leaders force on the regular people.
