CHIANG MAI: -- The governor of Chiang Mai is furious. Someone has been assuming his identity on Facebook in order to rip off other people online.

Now he is determined to go after those who have been using his name and picture, reported Daily News.

A representative of governor Pawin Chamniprasat went to the government watchdog organization the Damrongtham Centre in the northern province yesterday to outline the case against a Facebook user called " Panyan Chamratr".

The person or persons using that page have been pretending to be the governor and attempting to extort money under false pretenses for charity projects.

The governor said through his representative that people should check with the Chiang Mai municipal offices and official website before agreeing to anything online as bad people are using his name to break the law.

Under no circumstance should people transfer money to accounts of people they do not know, he said, as it could result in financial loss.

The matter is now in the hands of the Chiang Mai police with the governor determined to press charges to the full extent of the law.
