Sugar Substitute for Diabetics

Featured Replies

My wife is a type 2 diabetic. She has really good controls on her blood sugar levels. This is achieved by a mixture of good diet, exercise and medication .

One of the things that helps her in her diet is a sugar substitute called xylitol. Xylitol is processed from a plant fibre called xylene. It is great foe diabetics because it tastes the same as sugar (no aftertaste), contains 40% fewer calories than sugar and has a very low Glycemic Index avoiding spikes in blood sugar or insulin.

My question is, is it available in Thailand? If so from where and how much. I currently bring it from the UK whenever I come back from a trip. In the U.K. it is around £9 - £10 a kilogram.

You can give Palm Sugar a try too. Readily available over here and super cheap.

It also has a low GI of around 25 and has a pleasant caramel taste to it. I always think the blocks taste just like fudge back home.

Granulated it tastes just like brown sugar. The other benefit is that it is rich in minerals.

I haven't seen it in stores, but you can buy xylitol here. https://healthfoodthailand.com/en/seasonings-condiments/343-xylitol-crystals-sweetener-300-grams.html

Sucralose is readily available and Stevia is not hard to find in stores

Thank you for your efforts Sheryl. Stevia is very similar I will look for that. Sucralose has a horrible after taste in cooking. We have a few months supply, not sure it will be enough to see us through to our next trip at Christmas.

Will have to start charging our visitors from the in Xylitol. 1Kg for bed, board and tour guide seems fair to me. What do you think?

Xylitol is a excellent product, also reduces cavities.

We make our own toothpaste: approx 4 tablespoons baking soda, 1 teaspoon xylitol, few dashes Himalayan salt, organic coconut oil to desired consistancy. Baking soda is a bit abraisive so soft brush and be gentle. Also gargle with the mixture leaves your mouth really fresh.

You can order from iherb.com

Muskoka thanks very much, I had no idea there were so many products available. It was my wife's diabetic nurse in the UK that first recommended it.

Stevia is available in some supermarkets ( so either Villa, Tops or Foodland in Bangkok as they are the only ones I ever go to). I think it's Villa.

Stevia is 110 Baht for 80 grams at Villa ( I checked it through honestbee.co.th, the delivery service that advertises on this site).
