Can you get Testosterone via Thai social security?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I am wondering if it's possible to obtain any type of testosterone for free from the Thai social security. I had testicular cancer when I was younger so I need it for the rest of my life. Currently I am on Nebido (4ml/every 8 weeks) which is good, but expensive costing 7,000-10,000 THB per injection. I recently went to the Kluaynamthai hospital for a yearly check up to make sure the cancer is not recurring. I asked the doctor about this and he said "This hospital no have, use your own money". I understand they may not have an imported and expensive version, but it's odd that they don't carry any testosterone at all. It's a vital hormone for males and without it, one would feel very bad and probably die of some disease later on...

Does anyone know if it's possible to get it from another hospital under the SSC? I am just considering my future options, as my private health insurance (via parents) is running out after I turn a certain age so I can't claim the cost back from there anymore. If I now get private health insurance, it will not of course cover existing conditions.

Not heard of this before? Get it over the counter from Pattaya Chemists.

Dr Oliver sells it for about 8,000baht, good Doctor in Pattaya. Have a look at his site.

I pay $150 for Nebido in Australia.

There is also Testosterone Enanthate  which is usually a weekly injection and can work out cheaper.

Hope this helps?

Thanks for the tips, I know pharmacies that sell it but it's an expensive drug. In Europe most of the time social security covers Nebido when it's for treating the aftermath of a serious illness. Currently I just get a local doc to write me a prescription and  buy from a Sukhumvit pharmacy and get them refunded via my insurance. But my insurance is expiring soon, so I was looking whether it's possible to get it (or a cheaper version) for free via my Thai social security.

I know it's not a terrible amount to pay since it's only every 2 months, however it's still an extra expense of THB 4000 per month. On top of this I have to take an aromatase-inhibitor because the TRT causes my estrogen levels to go too high. This drug (Aromasin) costs also 7000 baht for a pack and I have to eat it daily, although a small amount. With this included, it costs me total around 6300 per month.

Yes, you can but you will need a letter of referral from the hospital.

Before trying to get that (which may be difficult) I suggest you consult another doctor there - say, an endocrinologist.

Longer term I suggest yo uchange your hospital registration under SS, the one you are at is not a good choice. Contact SS for information on when you can make the change and list if eligible hospitals. Look for the largest government hospital on the list.
