LAMPANG: -- A GIANT kilometre marker at the end of the Paholyothin Road in Lampang province in the North will be torn down to make way for more traffic lanes.

“It has to go,” Eknarin Chantawong, a senior highway official in Lampang confirmed on Tuesday.

Eknarin said he was aware of opposition against the plan to dismantle the marker, which was built with a budget of Bt3 million nine years ago.

“But the project to expand traffic lanes covers this spot. The expansion is needed because this area has had traffic congestion, which is very serious during holidays,” the official explained.

He said his agency would consult Lampang provincial authorities on whether another symbol would be erected in place of the giant marker.

The huge structure was constructed in 2008 by former governor Direct Konklab. The budget came from development funds for communities near a power plant.

Moron.

It's an eyesore... knock it down and plant some trees.

No chance of that. They'll pave it over as the article says.

A new generation with a new mindset is needed here.

Before building this giant thing, the governor and his engineers should have thought of the future

a bit, and placed it where it would not be a hazard that it is now . Duh!

Backward planning?

I agree! Thailand doesn't plan for the future! They plan one day at a time that's why Thailand doesn't have much infrastructure and is still considered a Third World Nation!
