Ubon Ratchathani imposes strict road regulations, especially to government officials who drink and drive

The governor of Ubon Ratchathani province reports that from today (Dec 28) onwards, local authorities will impose strict regulations on vehicular operation in the area in order to reduce road fatalities during the New Year Holidays.

The governor of Ubonratchathani province, Mr. Suthee Makboon (สุธี มากบุญ), revealed that from Dec 28 2006 to Jan 3 2007, road safety would be a priority for local officials, with 748 multiple checkpoints and service areas established throughout the province.

The governor said that officials would be monitoring the blood alcohol level of motorists and if drivers are found to have blood alcohol in excess of 50 milligram percent they would be prosecuted.

Government officials found to be driving drunk would be severely punished.

The Ubon Ratchathani governor added that 3 local officials have been charged with drunk driving in the past year, and have been imposed a 5% reduction on their salary.
