Rains, thunderstorms continue on in northern region

CHIANG MAI, 4 July 2017 (NNT) – The northern region of Thailand will have continuous rainfalls and isolated thunderstorms with the likelihood of flashfloods in August, according to Northern Meteorological Center. 

Northern Meteorological Center Director Methi Mahayossanan said low pressure prevailing over northern Vietnam and southern China, plus a weakening southwest monsoon over the upper part of Andaman Sea, has caused the precipitation in Thailand to decrease, except for the upper part of the northern region and some parts of the northeastern region where rainfalls will continue. 

He said the southwest monsoon will blow more strongly during 5-9 July 2017, causing thunderstorms and heavy rains in the upper northern region. 

He said 40-60 percent of the entire region will have thunderstorms during 5-10 July 2017. The low temperature will register at 23-26 celsius, with the high temperature at 32-35 celsius. The precipitation rate for July 2017 was forecast to be close to normal, with rainfalls in many areas during the latter half of the month. 

Northern Meteorological Center warned the public to brace for harsh weather conditions in August when a tropical cyclone is expected to develop in the west Pacific Ocean or the South China Sea and will likely pass close by or through the upper part of Thailand, causing heavy rains in many areas and the likelihood of flashfloods and inundations.
