Out of date anyway. First Thai drivers licence is now for 2 years.

I am 81 yrs old and still driving a car and motorcycle.

Have DL for car but not for motorcycle, never had one.

Have to renew my DL in 2019.

Not worried about this at all.

The nice people there just give me one.

Have to do the colour and brake test of course, I think so.but doesn't worry me.

I have my current Thai DL for more than 40 yrs and I get a new one.

No bribes involved.

Yes and it says 'renew' a temporary licence, but as Giddyup notes, the information is still out of date as the temporary licence is now 2 years.  I have had to submit a medical note for both of my renewals however (car and bike).

My mother (RIP) drove until she was 90 years old. She was visiting my sister. My sister had a beautiful small red maple tree beside her driveway, about 3 inches in diameter. My mother backed over it damaging the car as well as killing the tree. That was the end of her driving. My brother took her keys away from her. Truth be told, she shouldn't have been driving as long as she had.

 

I just renewed my driving license, I'm 72 years old. As much as I hate to admit it, my skills are not as good as they once were.

To me renewing a license that you have past a proficiency test for every 5 years is a waste of time and resources, just a paperwork exercise. 

 

In UK your license stays valid until you are 70, after that medicals must be had.

Considering the appalling road behaviour in LOS l would have thought using resources to sort that stuff out would be better spent. When folk get on in years then yes take a look at them..

Well, all done. Went for my new 5 year licence this morning, passed the colour, reaction and perception tests, sat through a 45 minute video on road safety, and now I'm good to drive until I turn 80. When (and if) I get to 80 I'll worry about my next step.

If you want to check whether you should be driving or not, take a reaction test on the Internet. I am 81 and my reaction time

is that of a 30 year old, I don't feel old because I want to feel young.

My mother drove from her 19th birthday for 80 years until I pulled the plug on her.

I'm pushing 84 and still drive to and from  Sattahip/Bangkok. Done it yesterday and will be doing it tomorrow. Getting my license renewed next year. I'll hang on till then

This may be your first dramatic accident in your life. You want to wait till it will happen.

Pleas do yourself and us a favour and choose a more adequate Place of living. You wait much too long for this.

Good chance, you feel  too old, too handicaped to move to a different place.

But you think, you are still able to drive a car.

Professional or otherwise never assume everyone is the same. There are teenagers driving motor vehicles that will never be fit/safe driving on the public highway. Age is a factor but don't tar everyone with the same brush, whatever the subject. There are septuagenarians and octogenarians still racing cars.

'I am a professional in these matters'. A professional what? It would seem that you may be a professional wind up merchant. As a previous poster has said, don't paint everyone with the same brush. I'm sure accident statistics will prove that older drivers are way down the list regarding accidents. Perhaps someone out there would care to post some.

I didn't say it was but if you know you are in good health then there's a better chance your driving will not deteriorate or as quickly.

Tuesday took a friend down for same took same as i did. Whoops now wanted a medical certificate!  We left he went back down following monday no medical cert and same documents as me this time they would only give him another 2 yr temp licence. I think hes given up now for a month or two lol.

As regards age and driving im not best placed to coment on my own driving. We all think we are fine safe and a good driver. As soon as the Mrs tells me she is worried or getting scared when i drive that will be it. Hang up the driving flip flops and be chauffeured around by the wife. I rekon 75 will be my limit driving maybe even 70.

Why would you limit yourself to 70 or 75 if you are still able to drive safely? I just turned 75 and renewed my 5 year licence, so I reckon I'm good to go to 80, maybe more.

I know, that most aged people are not willing to accept, that their abilities are decreasing, when getting older. Therefore someone else has to do something, to prevent damage to the public. In my country (f.e.), when getting older than 50(!!), I have to go to an ophthalmologist  when I still want to drive bigger vans. No,, the limitations of your abilities setting in when you get older are not the same for everyone. But thats not an real argument . Same with age limit of 18 for making license, etc. Instead, you can order everyone beyond 70, to have a severe (!) health examination every 5 years. But you need someone specialised  for this. The "examination" you  you get in Thailand for getting the license is a joke and (hopefully) everyone knows this.
