Hi

I need advice on a good voip instant set up system that I can use with my mobile phone and gives me any number I like so when I call someone I can make it look like I'm calling from UK for example. Any ideas on this and will it work with 0345 0870 numbers etc . Calls to banks even using a low cost prefix are becoming expensive.

Skype will do that. You can rent a number of your choice. Anyone dialling the number gets bounced straight to your mobile too, but they dont know it.

Hi Charlie

So I can rent the number off Skype directly and bounce it through my mobile? Any ideas on costs and tariffs or is it all via 3g and wifi?

From memory around $12 a quarter for the number. You can choose what city you want etc.

It doesnt cost anything to receive and really good rates to use. Best to check out the info directly on the skpe site.

You can set where you want the calls diverted either mobile or whatever and it works worldwide.

Companies can appear to be in USA & UK but in reality its a mobile in bangladesh as an example.

Thank you.  I shall get on that.

Just be prepared if you give out that number you may get calls in the night due to time difference.

There is a message service too (free) just remember to switch it on if you dont want to miss a call.

Sipgate gives you a free UK number with no monthly fees at all. Been using them for years. Works fine for non-geographical calls and uses a perfectly standard SIP client and not some proprietary one like Skype. SIP clients integrate perfectly with the dialler on an Android phone.

Ok KK thanks so what's the point for SIPGATE how do they make cash from a free service or do you pay call charges and if so what you using in terms of call time a month and how much cost is that averaging?

They charge for calls, of course. Prices on their website but they are reasonable. The main saving is not having to pay a monthly fee for the number.

Personally I rarely make outgoing calls but I do get some incoming ones from time to time.

As another choice look at SOHO66. Also I don't know about your mobile but mine allows me to set it not ring between certain hours. Also, if you use VOIP with a normal phone (I use a Seimens Gigaset) you can have an answering machine, block unknown, numbers etc.

Finally, I now believe Skype has changed it VOIP protocol from the original Skype protocol.

Been using the Skype number for about a week now and it is doing a good job.

I topped up £20 on it and have made many calls and have used less than £1.

I opted for a year line rental which is aproximately £44.

Not had any incoming calls yet, I do not get charged for them do I?

Sipgate would have saved you £44. But it's your money.

Hi Charlie

Just to update on this.

I topped up £20 on Skype number which is regional to London.  Made 77 phone calls with at least 80 minutes of call time and 1 month later I still have £11.50 on the account. I have called at least 8 countries. Really impressed with this. Only issue I have had is someone claiming to call me but u had no notification or alarm etc.

But overall I'm well happy with this it's saved me 2000 baht in 00500 phone calls on AIS etc.

Thanks again

Skype has terrible call quality. I was doing freelance sales work a few years ago so needed a stable VOIP solution. These guys are the best and very cheap.

For less than $20 a month I had a geographical number to an English city. You get 2000 minutes of calls to mobile and landline and the call quality is excellent. 100% stable, unlike skype. You also get a virtual switch for voice mail and call forwarding to any global number. There is even a smart phone app. Meaning if some one rings your virtual UK landline number. They connect to your smart phone. I researched many providers and this is the best by far.
