CityNews – The Association of Thai Deaf Children and Women’s Network Foundation held a conference on August 8th to study the significant factors that will help improve the potential work environment for those with disabilities.

 

An executive decree has stated that employees and businesses in both public and private sectors must support the career opportunities for people with disabilities. Three ways that businesses can do this is hire people with disabilities, support the fund for Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities and provide opportunity to disabled persons or their caregivers. It is also stated in the executive decree that for every 100 employees, there should be at least one with a disability if the work is appropriate. In doing so, businesses will be tax exempt for this employee.

Perhaps the Thai Government could look at instituting something like the US Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Basically the legislation forces all levels of Government to practice fair treatment of those with or developing disabilities.  The premise is one of lead by example and has worked extremely well. There are many 1000's of people who now carry on meaningful and contributory lives within their communities. Sure, it costs money to get going, but soon the programs begin to pay off for everyone.
