Minivan driver dead but all passengers safe in Bang Na - Trat accident

PATTAYA/CHONBURI: -- A minivan driver was pronounced dead after he suffered what police said was a likely heart attack while driving from Bangkok to Bang Saen.

 

But his actions may have saved the lives of his passengers.

 

Approaching Chonburi at kilometer marker 53 passenger Suphaporn Thurarat said that suddenly the driver veered into the central reservation concrete barrier.

 

There was damage to the front of the van and along one side.

 

Suphaporn said he was not going fast.

 

Driver Phayon Juitaeng, aged about 50, was given extensive CPR at the scene and on the way to a local hospital but could not be saved. He was pronounced dead later at hospital.

 

Police believe he had a heart attack or stroke and drove into the barrier to avoid a worse accident.

 

All his five passengers were shaken but otherwise unhurt.

 

The incident happened on Tuesday evening.

I find the police conclusion hard to believe and even harder to fathom how they could arrive at such a conclusion with any degree of certainty.

 

My feeling is that they just made it up as some sort of paternalistic, optimistic, empathetic mish-mash of emotions to paint a prettier picture and provide some consolation for the deceased's family and the minivan industry as a whole which does tend to get a lot of bad press deservedly.

 

Pulling over when feeling ill or pulling over onto the hard shoulder might have been better than driving into a concrete barrier which I don't believe he did deliberately anyway.

My take on it is: Sleepless for 10 days plus due to operator contractor human rights abuse... it affects the entire human nervous system including your heart if you are forced to work 10 days plus without proper sleep for the sake of the corrupt transportation industry...

Anyway,,,,,none of his passengers hurt & he was not driving too fast (thank heavens) sorry to hear that he could not be saved.Why all the nasty comments?

My pal in UK had a heart attack while driving and his car ended up in a roadside hedge as he lost  control. Fortunately, following him were an off duty nurse and a paramedic who treated him before the ambulance arrived. He survived. I doubt if there were any people in the vicinity where this van crashed who were knowledgeable enough to know and administer CPR.  They would however have taken cellphone pictures

Nowadays in Thailand everyone does CPR irrespective of the technique, the harm it might do or even the fact that the "patient's" heart is beating just fine. The key thing is to be seen doing it so you are viewed as a heroic lifesaver by others. The buzz the first responders get from this kudos is totally addictive so I am told.

Not driving fast , he sounds like a responsible driver to me unlike the majority. Sorry to hear about his passing. R.I.P.

I've never seen any van operators on the Pattaya route that has service at night, even the Ekamai bus runs later and earlier than the vans. If Somchai driver decides to stay up drinking Lao Khao with his friends at night, that's his problem

I know the van from Victory Monument - Chonburi - Bang Phra - Sri Racha - Pattaya would run very late. Since the spot they had at Victory Monument is now closed I don't know where they go from now.
