I am visiting Loei for a few days but unlike many other places there is not so much information about the area. I have heard it is a beautiful area so any suggestions of where to go. I also have a young son, 4, and would like him to enjoy his time as well. Thanks for any help.

Dansai is nice little town to stay in, too bad you missed the Phi ta Khon, If you have a motor bike just tool around the country side. Chiang Khan is a pleasant little town along the Mekong, but can get overrun by Thai tourists. Hopefully the Loogmai Guesthouse is still open. It is a real gem (I think it was an old Customs House), classic wooden floors, clean with great views.  The drive down to Nong Khai is great - follows the Mekong most of the way.

Loei is a beautiful province cradled between rolling hills and mountains as well as the iconic Mae Khong River. Loei town itself is quite pretty and worth a stroll around, but the real highlights are outside. Phu Kradueng National Park and mountain are very well known, and offer amazing sunrise views. Chan Kharn on the banks of the Mai Khong has a lively evening market offering local delicacies, tourist nick knacks, as well as some lovely original art and crafts. The town itself has a lot of the original old wooden shop house architecture.  Both of these places should be at the top of your list.

I would definitely recommend self driving if you can, as there are so many mountains, temples, small towns, and other places of interest to see.

If you get off the beaten path a little, you could visit Kunming of Thailand. It has unusual beautiful rock formations and a small waterfall. I took a friend of mine who lives in Korat to see it and I had a difficult time getting him to leave. He was absolutely fascinated.

You go south out of Muang Loei until you come to Nong Hin, (about 50 kilometers on highway 201) turn right at the first larger road past the bank and drive about 15 kilometers. You will come to a huge strange looking rock on the right side and you will turn right just past it. The village is just down the hill from the turn. The waterfall is a little further and the road ends at the waterfall.

There is a dinosaur park, from memory on the road between Loei and Udon Thani. Well worth a visit, has an animated Tyrannosaurus Rex. Better warn your son, though, quite lifelike.

Quite a beautiful area, some of the saw-tooth hills have Buddha statues in elevated caves.

I can also recommend Phu Ruea National Park which is especially beautiful with some amazing views as well as other areas of interest. There is also the excellent Chateau de Loei vineyard there which produces wines that are available locally are exported to Europe.

A Phu Kradung warning. It is a beautiful place but it is about a nine kilometer walk to the mountain top. I have never been to the top. The government has been wanting to put in a chair lift but the locals just won't have it. I think a chair lift would be a great idea and would substantially increase the popularity. Maybe that's the reason the locals oppose it. Maybe that and the porters who carry people up would lose their jobs. They charge by the kilo to carry you and your camping supplies to the top. I have no idea of the cost and have never asked.

Recently visited Loei and spend a few days driving around. Had a bad experience with Loei Palace Hotel due to flooding so wouldn't go there again but stayed in Phu Ruea and Dansai. Beautiful hilly countryside.
As others have said chiang Khan is worth a visit for walking street market along the Mekong.
Really enjoyed my time in the area despite the rain. Would def recommend. There was a thread on here with a couple of guys giving advice on things to see and I followed their trail. Worth seeing if you could dig it out in the Issan forum. Was great help to me Enjoy.
