Almost 3 years ago I had open inguinal hernia surgery with mesh in Hat Yai. All was fine until about 3 months ago when my mother's dog suddenly yanked me as I was walking her. Ever since, I've felt some pain in the groin area and some tenderness around the area of operation. Based on what I've read, this happens in a minority of cases of hernia surgery when mesh is used. I've also read that when this does occur, most doctors refuse to remove the mesh, partly because it is a fairly technical surgery. Has anyone ever heard of any doctors in Thailand who either remove mesh or remove part or all of a nerve in cases of chronic pain following hernia surgery? I plan on visiting the surgeon who operated on me 3 years ago, but I am in Bangkok now and won't be back in Hat Yai for a couple weeks. I thus want to start looking more into this since the pain, though relatively mild, does not go away and I've realized that the only solution may be surgery.

I think you are getting way ahead of yourself in assuming the mesh needs to be removed. And removal three years after the surgery would be extremely difficult if not impossible as scar tissue will already have formed over it.

Pain associated with mesh is usually continuous from the time of the surgery onward. You apparently had no pain until 3 years later.

If the pain is severe or accompanied by vomiting or other GI symptoms, see a doctor now, otherwise can see your original surgeon.

Based on everything I've read about hernia operations, it's typical for pain to occur to right after surgery but it goes away and does not return for the majority of cases.

Even in cases when pain appears years after the surgery, removal of the mesh is sometimes done to alleviate the pain. Yes, it is difficult, but it is done successfully by some doctors in some other countries. I just don't know if it is done in Thailand.
