UK tax payments

Featured Replies

Just a heads up from the 13 Jan 2018 HMRC will no longer accept personal credit cards for payments of taxes owed.

I had the same email which presumably you have had. Apart from wondering why they sent it to me as I am neither a Business nor an Agent, and the instinctive rise of the hackles at being addressed as a customer, I can't say it bothers me as I would never have thought of paying them by credit card.

Why do government departments whom we cannot choose to refuse to deal with insist on calling us "customers"? Anyway, here is the complete text:-

Dear customer,

Important Information about Changes to Paying HMRC

HMRC are making some changes to the ways customers can make payments.

The pay at the Post Office service will be withdrawn from 15th December 2017 and from 13th January 2018, HMRC will no longer accept payment by personal credit card. Debit cards and corporate credit cards will continue to be accepted.

We hope these changes don’t cause any inconvenience. There are still many ways to pay including:

  • Direct Debit
  • Online or telephone banking (including Faster Payments, Bacs and CHAPS)
  • Debit/Corporate Credit card online or by telephone.

These are more secure and will save you the time and expense of going to a post office or bank.

G‌OV‌.U‌K has information about paying HMRC including further ways to pay, along with more guidance on paying your self assessment tax bill.

As I recall credit card payments to HMRC attract a fee in any event - which debit cards and bank transfers don't.
