I want to visit Phangan and stay in some of my old haunts, but it wouldn't be possible till December. I know it's the main rainy season in October/ November, but will the crowds still be away in December?

I have no desire to visit when all the beaches are heaving with tourists, so the rainy season is obviously the best time.

Do tourists fill up everything at Xmas/ New Year anyway, even if it's persisting down every day?

Thanks for any help.

Yes - Christmas/New Year is sometimes called Very High Season here on the islands.

Difficult to get flights, rent cars, etc. A good time to stay indoors and bingewatch that serious you have always wanted to see.

Thanks to climate change and repeated La Nina events, Thailand now enjoys year round rain season!

So the answer to the title question is: till...the end of time...

Thailand has different rainy seasons depending on where you are, Samui has it in November because of the east monsoon, andamaan sea has it in May-Aug when the west monsoon comes, has always been like this.

Not so much rain this year.

Christmas, new year is peak season,  it will be hard to get a room or a bike.

I prefer to drive my car that time because of all newbie tourists on the road.

Aye, can't be sure of anything so you have to look at trends/ history which leads me to the conclusion that the sweet spot between good weather starting and loads of tourists arriving will be the first two weeks of December.

Thanks for replies. I might have to wait till October next year as it appears I'm already too late now.

Does the crush ease off anytime between February and June?

Normally after Songkran in mid April, the tourists begin to disappear – Easter Holiday seem otherwise to be the end of the high-season, depending of which comes first, some years a period in March can be little low of foreigners – the month May and June are considered low season, however with very nice weather and never too crowded; but on Koh Phangan I would stay away from Haad Rin, if one like a non-crowded place, as many youngsters come in these month for partying, even high-school-party-trips from other East Asian countries begin to appear on Koh Samui, and they may also commute to Haad Rin for a regular special monthly event.

You can find a Koh Samui weather-table at Wikipedia, which is also suitable for Koh Phangan.

From old time the tourists seasons of Samui and her sisters has been:

Peak Season, from ca. 20th December till mid January, not because of weather, which can be extremely bad some years, and very good other years, but because of Santa Claus and New Year.

High Season, from mid January till end of April; and again from early July till end of September. Mind you that weather can in some odd cases be rainy in January and till beginning of March.

Low Season, during May and June, and October; the last month the rain-season officially begins and some years can have quite a lot of downpour already in October. May and June are by weather among the best months, and normally not too crowded.

No Season, in old time Samui was almost closed during November and till mid December, where Xmas-aliens for some odd reason, other than weather, appeared. Few resorts still close or operate at low level with most of the staff sent on holiday; however, a few years has been quite heavily booked (some resorts even full) by low-price East European and Russian tourists, and in some later years a bit of Chinese also. The last few "no seasons" was quiet, and this year also seem very quiet, so far.

Thanks for additional replies. Seems May June is the time to go.

First time on Had Rin in 90s- super lovely, but places I stayed all replaced by expensive resorts since.

I always stayed in the north, so that's where I'll be going again. No desire to see Had Rin now.
