£27k raised to bring Northern Ireland crash victim home from Thailand

The family of a Co Down man facing a battle to walk again following a cycling accident in Thailand have praised his courage and thanked supporters after £27,000 was raised in just two days to bring him home safely.

 

Sait Can Ozdemir (26), from Ballymartin, was seriously injured on Wednesday when he fell from a bike in Chiang Mai, a northern province of Thailand.

 

It is understood he hit a ditch 2ft deep while cycling down a steep hill. Within seconds, two friends accompanying Mr Ozdemir found him lying unconscious and his bike nearby in the soil.

I learned my lesson about cycling down steep slopes when I was 6, in the garden.......on my tricycle.

 

I suppose he is of a generation that was "protected" at that age.

He ran/skidded off the road into the drainage ditch alongside the road while cycling down from Wat Doi Suthep.

Entirely his own fault, going too fast for the road conditions, they are resurfacing the road at the moment, I've been avoiding it as I don't want to risk breaking anything.

I will not nitpick at the boy's misfortune and wish him a fast recovery.

 

But...but, this should be a lesson to have proper coverage for travel accident/illness insurance abroad that includes  cash advance in 24 hours for hospital fees and coverage for repatriation, should it be with a private medicaid plane. Such insurance in Europe costs less then US$ 200,--/annum.

He must have missed the tree branch marking the hole to warn drivers.

A CO Down man has only a "small chance" of walking again after a serious bike accident in Thailand.

 

Sait Can Ozdemir, born in Turkey but who moved to Ballymartin as a child, also suffered a broken wrist, a punctured lung and had fluid on his lungs after he lost control of the bike he was riding and it fell into a ditch.

 

He has now told how he has been "humbled" after well-wishers at home raised more than £43,000 to pay for his recovery.

He will need every penny and more to cover the money donoted to cover RAM. They are so careful to cover every bill that they will even test him for pregnancy.
