The house was built some 30 ago. Very solid. Has even a working fireplace in the living room. Proper chimney. Not unlike this examplemantels-for-fireplaces-Living-Room-Traditional-with-direct-vent-gas-fireplace.jpg

However, not used in years.

A convenient solution is a gas fireplace. Anyone with suggestions?

they been fitting slow burning/low combustion fire places in them for many years.

the advantage is the heat stays in the room ,unlike open fire places that draw in cold air and all the heat goes out the chimney.

That's true.....Guessing the gaps & typical Thai construction probably would nullify any heat a normal fireplace would throw.....

Wonder if they have any effective wood/pellet insert stoves available....

That would work.....Kept a house heated in the sierras that way - coupled with an ingenious small fan system that circulated the ceiling height heated air to the other areas of the house.....

For the couple days per year it’s actually ‘cold’, an electric space heater is a much simpler and cheaper solution (I’ve seen them for sale at kiosks in Tesco and elsewhere), and it can easily be moved from room-to-room.

Solar oil filled heater (looks like a radiator...on wheels)

great for med to small size rooms

There is a thread on thai visa about them

works good for me !

In a few months, someone will be on TV complaining about

how hot it is.

Turn the stove on and point a fan at it
Thanks all for your suggestions. I believe a gas burner which heats up the bricks is still the best warming element in a room. Certainly with a longer effect.
Has anyone such an installation?

You need to factor in proper insulation in the roof.  I was walking around our house a couple of nights ago with a digital thermometer taking readings of the walls, floors, and ceiling tiles around the house.  The coldest reading where alway the ceiling.  Guess where your heat goes.  I really need to put insulation batting in the ceiling of our two rooms which have heaters in the cold season and A/C the rest of the year.
