Didn't open last night Saturday, roomer doing rounds he is closing up !

Loved the place back in the olden days. I think he opened about 1993 (?) and it was a Go-Go bar for quite a while. Had a lot of fun until he toned it down because his brother got into politics.

Don't frequent the place but at least it has a bit of character. Unfortunately most places seem to be turning into 7/11's and Chinese souvenir stores. I hope its not another one.

Used to be good years ago, but it’s a bit guff theses days. Staff are completely disinterested and the food is minging.

Used to be great in the old days, reasonable food, reasonable priced drinks, but most of all he had some cute chicks in there, food, drink and a cute chick takeaway.

 

Then I turned up there one evening and the front had been taken down, it became like all the others an open bar, the cute chicks were replaced by a few ladyboys and the whole atmosphere of the place had gone. That must have been a least 10 years ago, never been back there since. So unfortunately if this is the bitter end of John`s Place, I doubt it will be missed.

John's Place was open on Christmas eve so maybe not the end.

I like the place. Best spot in town for a spot of people watching.

John is honest and treats his old customers well, one of few who hands out a discount on your bill.

Yeah the staff are not Stunners but well this is CM not sum BKK den of inequity.

There were a few years when Chiang Mai had BGs of roughly Bangkok quality. However, in much lesser numbers, so they did not need to hustle like in the Big Mango where there is so much competition.

Ha-ha ,Johns place didnt suffer because there were no prostitutes there and you custom was not missed .

   They girls were not replaced by ladyboys , prostitutes were replaced by waitresses  , it turned from a whore mongers pick-up joint, to sitting upstairs and watching all the punters shuffle into the go-go bar across the road

The staff do seem to be disinterested , IMO, thats just because there are too many of them which leads to them having nothing to do most of the time and boredom sets in , also , John has the place covered by CCTV and he sits upstairs watching everyone and controls what they are doing by speaking to them on walkie talkie .

   It cannot be nice , knowing that you are being watched all the time .

John seems to be very controlling of his staff , telling them all what to do all the time .

I was in there one night watching football on the screen , standing room only and he came up to me and told me to go and stand in another place in the bar and he pointed at where I should go and stand .

  I told him that I an quite happy standing where I am and that I will not move .

He seemed to get annoyed that someone wouldnt do what he told them to do .

He also makes his staff queue up publicly to receive their wages and he deducts money from their wage packets , infront of customers and staff .

  Maybe a nice guy to have as a friends, but must be unpleasant working for him

Not been out in BKK for 13 years however folk have told me that B5,000 is what is expected down there for a night with a young  Stunner.

I've been there many times. Never saw a transvestite there.

So, when there were no prostitutes there , you stopped going ?

The prostitutes were replaced by waitresses , not ladyboys .

Waitresses, real people , ones who you have to talk to and it being their choice as to whether they want to talk to you , unlike the prostitutes who have to talk  to you , because you brought them a drink .

   Some , many of those waitresses were very nice young ladies , although to get acquainted with them, takes a bit more than a barfine and the choice of either long time or short time .

I`ve had 17 girl friends over the last 45 years and only 12 of them were prostitutes.

2-3 years ago Stickman (He ran a popular Blog on BKK nightlife first mentioned the B5K).

I met him way back in year of the Tsunami in BKK. A New Zealander and young bloke who had many reasonable views on BKK nightlife and Thailand in general.

I sent him an Email suggesting, for I am no Wordsmith, that Cowboy had killed Bangkok Nightlife.

Mr T.L.Edwards, The Cowboy, introduced the first jukebox to the street, that became named after him by Bernard Trink nightlife correspondant for the Bangkok World then the Post.

Cowboy and his mainly US contemporaries wanted what the knew back in the States out here, Burlesque and or the Girl on the Crome pole.

Thai authorities allowed the Girl on a Pole but nudity was not really on.

The old style Thai Bar started to die for with the new style came the Tourist who needed cheap immediate thrills for their one time or few time visits to The Land of Smiles.

Germans kick in large sums and now own I understand many bars in BKK, all for the tourist $.

The old bars where one could go for a drink to Bullsh1te with like minded men, where on their way out. Yes They all had young ladies who could be easily persuaded to accompany one home or to short time hotel.

But these ladies where different to the one who I am now led to understand dominate in BKK.

Thai yes, but straight up from the country. The came and found the Mama from their own province who would look after them as they undertook their entry into their chosen Profession, said to be oldest in the history of the world.

Now I am told that Coyotes, semi professional dancers dominate and demand and receive vast sums from the Worlds Tourist. 

The days of the Thai frang expat and their contemporaries the Middle East Oil Trash have gone.

   From your photo from 1994 , 23 years ago, when Johns was still  a strip joint, shows that cyberferang used to go there when the  strippers were ladyboys and now he olonger goes to Johns place because the waitresses s are female

Nothing to with being "righteous" , prudish or anything like that , and I have no qualms about prostitution , I just find it monotonous the constant sex references .
