Oil.

I just had a 140,000 km service done on my Ford Ranger 2.5 Dti at the Ford dealers in Nakhon Sawan and they asked me before they put in this 10W/40 synthetic oil in.

When I got the bill it came out at 310 a litre which is expensive but they couldn't really take it out again.

Next time it will be ordinary oil at a lower cost.

You think it is expensive :o synthetic oil is best for your motor, your motor will proberly last longer as well, so expensive,,, no.

I get my Nissan diesel serviced by the dealer. I happened to look at the oil bottles the last time and it said 20-W-50 semi synthetic. Since an oil and filter change costs about 1,100 baht the oil must not be that expensive.

Am I right in thinking that in this hot country a 20/50 would be better than a straight 40 ? also what about Rimular oil, I know it's been around for years and is sold as oil for diesel only, why is that ?

Shell Rimula Ultra - first to gain Scania LDF-2 approval

Shell’s top-tier heavy duty engine oil - Shell Rimula Ultra - is the first oil to meet the latest, high performance, long oil drain requirements of Scania trucks, LDF-2.

Look like its for trucks

In Australia & when I had my 3.5 Litre 4 cylinder diesel Landcruiser, I used Golden Fleece DELO 200 for years. Later, I got a 4.0 Litre turbo-charged diesel Landcruiser, at which point in time I then changed to Golden Fleece DELO 400. Bloody good oil. I'm not sure if it is still available under the name of Golden Fleece...could've changed by now. Maybe to Caltex.

Oil for 'diesels only' has a higher detergent content than that for petrol engines, I am tempted to use it instead of the proper stuff in my ageing Suzuki, I am sure the high end tuff would do no harm and it comes in 6litre packs instead of the 4 litre packs gas engine oil comes in. However I have read that you really should use the right oil in the right engine.

If they have put synthetic in it, yes its more expensive, but you won't need to change it for a long time/many kms. Your handbook should explain this re "long service" intervals or similar.

As for what numbers. As i understand, the numbers largely refer to the temperature range. 20/50 used to be very popular in England but has now been largely succeeded by 10/40. Here we have considerable variations in temperature from say -10*c to +30*C

If the correct oil for the temperature ranges is not used it can become too thin & therefor useless when it is hot, & very sludgy when its cold.... causing massive turnover drag on start up.

I'm no expert in this & not pretending to be so, but that's the basics.

Thailand does not have the same extremes of temperature, therefor i'd say the 40 should be fine.

This kind of explains it: Engine oil viscosity

Also there is a difference in oils suitable for naturally aspirated diesels & turbo diesels.

Hi

Oil is the life blood of your engine, try and save a few baht here and your engine will suffer.

Most engines now use thinner oil as this is easier to move around your engine and hence improves performance and economy. 20/50 is fine if your car was made in the sixties, 10/40 for the 80-90s, but now a lot of cars run on 5/30.

I always change my oil at 5000km intervals and always put the best I can in.

Cheap oil is a false economy.

I agree. Don't skimp on the oil, the life blood of any internal combustion engine, especially a diesel engine. The engine will last longer. The operating conditions are particularly gruelling in Thailand and, although we have a high ambient temperature, we don't have such a large season to season temperature difference. Stick with the 10W/40 synthetic oil as synthetic oils do not suffer the oxidation and degradation that normal mineral lubricating oils do. As Warwick7735 has said, it's false economy to buy cheap oils as, although more expensive, the synthetic oil has a much longer operating life.
