Police in Bangkok have arrested a 26 year old baggage handler after a theft from the loaded luggage of a Thai reporter flying back from Samui last week.

Thongchai Mana was caught on CCTV and a search of his room in Minburi nailed him.

Some 5,000 baht and a 50 satang weight gold chain were taken from a bag belonging to Phuriphat Bunnin, a Thai Rath TV newsman.

Deputy national police chief General Wirachai Songmetta announced the result of the case at Suvarnabhumi yesterday.

The theft occurred as bags were being unloaded from Bangkok Airways flight PG 104 on January 25th.

Thongchai has admitted the crime and been charged with theft at an airport. He said he acted alone.

They should've thrown the book at him by charging him with "theft at an international tourist hub".

Who puts money and gold in the hold of a plane. Arrest the reporter as well for being a Willywonker.

Oh, well, back to work as a police officer next week then.

...most of their victims are just visiting ...never to be seen again....this gives them the impetus I guess....

...the same mentality justifies overcharging and other abuse ....

5 or 10 baht is the weight,  you can go to a Gold shop and ask to buy gold -  either jewellery or ingots, it is sold by weight, the weight used is the Baht hence the name of the currency, jewellery is usually slightly more expensive than ingots because of the work involved, you can go to a gold shop and buy 1/2 a baht ingot, a 1 baht ingot upto whatever you want I think.

So, the more the chain (or jewellry weighs) the more expensive it is :) you can check the daily rate online as it is set by some government body the same goes for petrol, diesel etc. I can't believe that you have lived here for many years and are not aware of the price of gold in the kingdom ?? They even display on TV at certain times of the day, Thai ladies need to know how much they are worth
