Khon Kaen Bus Station

I sometimes ride the Mukdahan - KK bus on my way to the airport, but it was mentioned on another forum that the huge Central Bus station has now closed. When I last did the trip out of KK two or three months ago we were taken on a shuttle bus to an almost deserted new bus station on the outskirts and transferred to another bus to Mukdahan. Having to arrive at that terminal and then transfer to the airport looked like a no-go as there were no taxis in sight.

Have all buses now been transferred to the new terminal, which presumably means there is now a reliable taxi service from there?

I visited the new bus station - far out of town, but there should be easier parking. Unsure about taxis, but I think they go there.  It would be easy customers for them.  Maybe have an app like Grab handy, in case.

Pretty sure the old bus station is closed, as their lease was not renewed,  Now there are cars parking in the bus parking spaces.

Khon Kaen has western style taxi services available so if there are no taxis at the bus station you can just call one up.

Not sure about forum rules on such things so I've sent you the telephone number in a private message.

All the taxis are metered and we have used them many times with no bad stories to report. Reasonably priced too.

Thanks. But I've used 'metered' taxis dozens of times in KK and only twice have they used the meter to go to the airport. Usually they demand double the metered fare but I'm not going to argue over 80 baht,

I assume you mean at the new bus terminal?

yes. The new bus terminal. The taxi stand I would have to say is more legitimate. The gypsy taxis will more than likely not be willing to use the meter.

  • 3 weeks later...

A personal update, I experienced the new bus station last week. There were plenty of taxis with a control booth, fare was meter plus 20 baht. It took me 15 minutes to get to the airport for 150 baht, the same time and (unmetered) cost as from the old bus station. From the airport it's meter plus 50, so about 180. All in all, no probs.

The train station is not back to its old place.  And personally I doubt it ever will be.

I passed by the site of the old station last Friday and they are building the new sky train  line there and it's a building site.  In fact I had to queue for some minutes because two huge concrete beams for the site were being brought through on very long lorries.

The new station, which is not easy to find but is very close to my home,  looks temporary with its portacabin buildings.  The map on Wiki shows a light railway station called "Khon Kaen Grand Station"  and I think this is where the sky train railway and the main Bangkok to Nong Khai railway  intersect.  I suspect that it will be by the railway (obviously) on the other side of the road from Central Plaza.  But what do I know?

The building of the replacement elevated train station is on the site of the old station and looks a few months from completion so you still need to use the temporary station further south.

Obviously the new Sky Train will connect to this BUT as the contracts for the building of this wont be issued until 2018 at the earliest it will be used SRT long before a Sky Train ever connects to it.

I don't understand why people fail to comprehend that the Sky Train project has not progressed beyond some computer graphics and all the infrastructure being built in the centre of Khon Kaen is for the elevation of the SRT line.

The easiest way to find the new train station is to go to Tesco Lotus on Mittraphap Rd across from Woo Foo shopping plaza. Go to the very back of the parking lot near the motorcycle parking. There is a gate with a walkway over the tracks to the new train station.  The gate is open from      6: am to 11: pm.  In the picture, you can see the back gate. It is also next to the new convention center.
