webfact Posted February 23, 2018 Posted February 23, 2018 Lift at Maxx Hotel falls after electrical short-circuit By Thai PBS A lift of a three-star Bangkok hotel on Rama 9 fell off from the 24th floor early Friday morning (Feb 23) after a brief fire at an elevator control room. Huay Kwang police said the accident happened at the 350-room Maxx Hotel at about 8am, but there was no injuries. Initital report said there was eletrical short circuit at the control room of the lifts, sparking off a fire. The fire quickly raged to one of the hotel’s five lifts, causing it to fall from the 24th floor and stuck at the 16th floor. Other four lifts also stranded as electricity was cut. Just1Voice Posted February 23, 2018 Posted February 23, 2018 Thank goodness no one was in them at the time. That's pure heart attack action if there had been. 1

Get Real Posted February 23, 2018 Posted February 23, 2018 Another lift from the 19th century with no automatic brakes working. This must be like an extra update regerding lifts here. 1 2

Popular Post norbra Posted February 23, 2018 Popular Post Posted February 23, 2018 (edited) Must admit that in the home country the manner in which the ends of the hoisting ropes were "fitted off" they could never break away from the the lift, but here this could well be the point of failure. 38 minutes ago, Crossy said: It only fell 8 floors, so one assumes the gravity brake did its job, eventually. Assuming this lift had 5 or 6 hoisting ropes it would take a huge fire to burn through these steel ropes,if the ropes were still intact , and had the motor brake been fire damaged, the empty lift would go up not down as the counter weight is 60+% heavier than the empty lift. I have attended several lift fires where the complete shafts and control rooms have been gutted, the only remains were the driving motor.the overspeed detection equipment the hoisting cables, the steel lift car structure, the counter weight and all the guide rails. In all these cases the hoisting cables had stretched but had not broken Edited February 23, 2018 by norbra more info 3

Lupatria Posted February 23, 2018 Posted February 23, 2018 They are just using the Thailand 4.0 program to upgrade the balcony jumps. 1
observer90210 Posted February 23, 2018 Posted February 23, 2018 Wonderful maintenance - wonderful safety assessment from the authorities - if the authorities put it the same energy and hassle on safety standards as they do on visa issues, things would work just fine ! 2

stud858 Posted February 23, 2018 Posted February 23, 2018 I've seen inside my ex condos lift room. Metal filings scattered all over the floor from cable operation. Very dangerous i thought that the lift company doesn't bother vacuuming and cleaning to avoid shorted circuitry. I've asked my current condo manager to check the room and make sure it is clean.

Definitely unsafe situation as the metal filing come from the inside of the cable due to lack of lubrication in the hemp core. The cables then become "thinner" and have a tendency to lose traction and or break. Should have been renewed long ago.

Room is clean. 2 lifts are maintained by Hitachi company on yearly contract at my condo. Anybody know the maintenance company involved at recent accident?

norbra Posted February 27, 2018 Posted February 27, 2018 On 1 year contracts replacing hoisting ropes and other safety equipment is the responsibilty of the owner, the maintenance company should be providing the owner with information/quotation to correct foreseeable problems.
