Three workers killed, two injured as 10-wheeled truck hit pickup

By The Nation

Three workers were killed and two others injured when the driver of a 10-wheeled truck dozed off and crashed into a pickup transporting factory workers in Nakhon Ratchasima on Tuesday morning.

Police said the accident happened at 6.58am on Mittraparp Road in Tambon None Thong of Nakhon Ratchasima’s Si Khiew district.

The three killed workers were identified as Siriyaporn Khanakhewua, 40, Thaweesilp Changmai, 29, and Wiroj Kijdiew, 38.

Police said Naruemol Upama, 44, and Sawana Prueksa, 25, were injured and taken to Si Khiew Hospital.

The 10-wheeled truck was driven by Thaweerat Nalinkamolrat while the pickup’s driver was Preechapol Raksasuwan, both whose ages were unknown.

Preechapol said he was picking up workers at the Funai Thailand factory in Nakhon Ratchasima’s Pakchong district and stopped to meet others on the way when the truck rear-ended his vehicle.

Thaweerat told police that he had fallen asleep and lost control of the truck.

At least he didn't use the old excuse 'Brake Failure'.    Never known anywhere that people fall asleep so often at the wheel.

Or have their brakes fail so often...

Being an ex continental truck driver from the UK, I would love to know what HGV rules and regs there are over here. How many hours they can work a day, breaks and hours off etc. Anyone know?

We all know that Thais have the ability to sleep anywhere at any time. It's a pity that so many do it while driving. I wonder it's the Face thing again - admitting they are tired and can't function properly means losing it.

It happens so often maybe drivers are permitted to carry on until they fall asleep or run out of energy drinks!
