Wenger - It’s a miracle we’re still involved

By Declan Taylor

Arsène Wenger admits that it is “a miracle” that his side are still involved in the title race.

Arsenal have suffered five defeats already this term - two more than they did in the whole of last season - but sit just two points behind champions Manchester United and eight behind current leaders Liverpool.

After Saturday’s tense victory over Wigan, Wenger acknowledged that his side have been below-par at times this campaign. However, two wins from two against fellow ‘big four’ sides have ensured that the Gunners have not been cut too far adrift and the manager is adamant that these victories against the Gunners’ fellow contenders could secure the title itself.

"What is a miracle is that we are still in there with a chance with 29 points,” said Wenger. “We have had some indifferent games but the thing that has saved us is that we have beaten our main rivals. That has prevented some damage.

“We are still in there - we play Liverpool at home soon which is a chance as well. We know we can't lose any of the games against the big teams now.

or how about we cant lose ANY games from now? :o

too true about the days of Tony Adams, Seaman, Winterburn et all

the boro game ended a draw of 1:1, but I think it was more out attacking rather than defense that was the bigger problem.

Arsenal could lose Theo Walcott for just £400,000

Exclusive by John Cross 5/01/2009

Arsenal run the risk of losing England star Theo Walcott for just £400,000 after dragging their feet over a new contract.

Real Madrid, Manchester City and Chelsea are all aware of the amazing transfer loophole and are keeping tabs on the situation.

FIFA rules mean that any buying club would just have to pay £80,000 training costs for every year that Walcott has been at Arsenal which would equate to just under £400,000 by the time his contract expires in the summer of 2010.

Walcott, 19, is frustrated that Arsenal have been slow to discuss a new deal even though his current contract has just 18 months left to run.

Arsenal have held just one meeting with Walcott’s advisers and have yet to make him an offer - even though he has become the English game’s hottest property.

Walcott established himself on the world stage after scoring his England hat-trick in Croatia last year.

The teenager, who joined from Southampton for an initial £5million transfer fee in January 2006, is the lowest-paid member of the England squad. He is on around £20,000 a week even though his transfer value has rocketed to £20m.
