Renewing Thai Driver's License after moving to new Province

Featured Replies

I could not find a fitting answer to my specific situation after looking through many forum threads here. I plan to get an affidavit to validate my monthly income at the US Embassy in BKK next week and think I also need to get there an affidavit to verify my residency in Thailand to renew my Thai drivers license (DL) that I obtained almost 5 years ago. I have since moved to a different province.  My O-A visa extension expires at the end of April and my Thai DL expires two weeks after that. [My US license is valid till 2022.] Will I have any problem receiving and using this US Embassy notarized affidavit to renew my Thai DL, if I will only have less than 6 weeks left on my visa extension when I apply for it at the Land Transportation Office (LTO) in my new province? Do I have to get the affidavit translated into Thai and certified at the ministry of Foreign Affairs? (like with a marriage certificate form abroad)? Would I be better off getting the affidavit next week and WAIT until after I get my O-A visa extended another year BEFORE I apply for the renewal of my DL? [I read I possibly only might only receive a 2-year license.] What exact documents do I need to take to the LTO?  For proof of residency is a recent TM30 sufficient?

Many of my Thai friends say I can simply renew my Thai DL online; but, I have not read about that anywhere. Anyone know about this?

Lastly, I have read numerous articles about new regulations requiring 15+ hours of driving training, videos, and tests in order to renew a license? Has this new policy come into effect already? Anyone have any experience with it--good, bad, or ugly? Thanks

Renew DL online? Don't thinks so, you have to do a few tests like colour, reflex and perception when you renew, as well as watch a video and be issued with a new licence that requires a new photo.
