Rabies situation this year is worse than that of last year, but the situation is under control, Livestock Department deputy director-general Chirasak Pipatthanapongsophon assured on Sunday.

He disclosed that, since the beginning of this year, there have been five fatalities from rabies, but the situation is under control because the Livestock Department has launched a campaign to educate the people the disease, prompting many of them who own cats and dogs to bring their pet animals for vaccination against rabies.

As a result of massive campaign, he claimed that rabies cases in animals and humans had steadily dropped, citing the case of Roi-et province which he said could be declared rabies-free zone within two years.

Once again proving that Gobble-dee-gook, rather than Thai, is the native language of government

Preventing rabies could be easy compared to teaching them the meaning of "under control"

Pet owners can have their pets vaccinated against rabies by the vet so that they do not get sick even if they bite an infected animal. More difficult is the immunization of wild animals, as even foresters and veterinarians are not able to vaccinate every single animal. Since wildlife and bats are the cause of rabies disease worldwide, a large-scale vaccine is the only way to permanently eradicate the disease. In Germany, the vaccine baits were partially ejected by planes, the animals have eaten them and thus triggered the immunization.

There are only two steps to take:

- follow the Swiss model of vaccinating wild foxes. They inserted the vaccine into chicken heads left form slaughter houses and distributed those all over the forest; within a short period of time rabies disappeared completely from the wildlife scene in Switzerland; many decades ago. Taking the Thai poultry industry it would be more than an adequate and cheap solution for the future

- the present endemic requires culling as well as educating all those nicely dressed office girls feeding stray dogs and pussy cats from all those noodle carts and street side kitchens. These girls are doing those animals NO favour and it can be witnessed, for decades as well, anywhere. We've had resident flock of stray animals around the corner near the bus stop for this very reason.

If this is not happening then Thailand will be the mother-of-all-rabies-countries and I have the strange feeling that, unless article 44 is pulled, this is the way the realm is heading

Please, could someone tell me what is NOT under control in Thailand.

Sure. Do you have an hour to spare . . . and a big notebook? Seriously, though; I struggle to see anything - connected to the government - as being under control; law & order, education, poverty, transport, to mention but a few out-of-control areas. But this rabies scare does need some pretty urgent action, though. That should test our Superman.

They what? Educate Thais on anything remotely approaching a hazardous situation, and most will go deaf.
