New "Lane Change" cameras reveal extent of bad driving on Thai roads - 14,000 caught on first day

Thai Rath reported that more than 14,000 drivers had been caught breaking the law by newly installed CCTV cameras on the very first day.

The cameras have been installed at 15 spots in Bangkok to stop dangerous and annoying lane changing moves.

The idea is twofold - help with enforcing the law to encourage better driving and circumventing corrupt police who take bribes instead of fining people.

If all the people caught were to pay the fines of up to 1,000 baht that would mean a 14 million baht windfall.

Some 14,710 offenders were trapped on Wednesday, the first day of operation.

Fines will be in the post.

If they set up camera's at every traffic light junction in the country what would the daily score be for red light jumpers ?   Tens of thousands every day and when will the Government wake up to this cash cow ?

Agree, and further I wonder if anybody has thought about installing cameras so that they can catch multiple types of offences.

In this case it's all billed as 'lane changing offences', but could they not be installed at strategic locations etc., to catch other offences. Multitasking...

Fine as much as they will, Thai traffic is not ready for such laws as

traffic's dynamics are build on changing lanes often every few minutes,

and as usual, that will be another road's laws that drivers will have

to either dodge, ignore or live with like many others road's laws that

no one one heed or pay attention to...

but how many will actually pay the fine

Now we get the problem arranging the delivery of all those penalty charge notices and monitoring the payment processes.

Cant wait to see all the adverts for those number plate covers that can fool the cameras.

Problem being that no-one has ever managed to make one that works. ??

Implement those throughout the country and the Thai government could stop collecting taxes.  Traffic violations revenue would fund the entire government.  And Thais being Thais will simply pay the fines and keep driving poorly.  Lol!
On Highway 11 south of Chiang Mai, one camera taking pictures of cars driving on the shoulder in order to push in front of traffic stopped by the stoplight at the Thai Watsadu intersection would generate a couple of million baht a day in fines easily.  Maybe the BIB will finally figure out that they have a better Cash Cow than shaking down motorcyclists for not wearing helmets.

Actually I think this will be very effective, the speed camera's in Khon Kaen, capture thousands every day going over 80 KM per hour on a 5 Lane road. there are a lot of warning signs all along that stretch.

However people get their fine (800 THB) nicely send home with pictures of the car, location and number-plate. Almost feel like being back in Holland.

I hope they are able to back up the fine with an actual video of the offence to all 14k people

Had a fine through the post a couple of months back. It has a picture of the car crossing the solid line and a close up picture of the car and plate number.

While it’s a good idea to monitor the traffic and the surroundings ( providing the police doesn’t fall asleep on their smart phones tho ) I’m not entirely sure that the general public will observe the traffic lights and the constant lane changing..The worst ones are actually the old polluting bus driving  erractly all over the place and needless to say the couldn’t careless Taxis, apart from this it sounds like it will soon become like the UK where every step you make is monitored :(

WOW !! Cameras catch 14.000 on the first day, well thats ok but how many will actually pay the fine, very few i think.

You missed the other part of the news.

outstanding fines and you can not renew the car license.

So you willl pay the fine since the cameras and car information  systems are linked. other systems are also getting linked or are linked too.

Just curious. Presumably there were some instructions on the paper.

What is the time limit for paying the fine, and where do you pay ?

As someone who learnt to drive in a country with reasonable training, stringent license testing and keen police enforcement, I was always told that when wanting to overtake a slower moving vehicle you should move into a right adjacent lane, and then move back into the left-most lane when it's safe and clear to do so.  So it this maneuver now considered illegal in Thailand.

14 million baht a day lol

That's supposing that the drivers are licenced, that their address is on file and correct.   Then there's the small matter of follow-up.   What happens when/if they don't pay up?

New soft-ware in Australia also detects number plates of drivers who haven't paid, don't hold a licence, and police down the road are notified and waiting.

Not sure on a time limit. I paid the fine at the local KTB branch.

Yes but you are assuming that all the cars have a license, many dont.

They have these cameras in brazil, Costa Rica and lots of others. In Brazil you are sent a ticket and points against the license of the owner of the car, my GF had the car in her name and got pissed every time I got a ticket,LOL. You don't pay in 30 days they add 25% and then you are forced to pay if you want your tag renewed or sell car.

Pretty clueless not to begin where people are dying running red lights. Actually the cameras on straight high speed sections become dangerous as drivers get used to the locations and brake abruptly to slow down.

I wonder if they are using these on the highways, where they are really needed. In all the years I have lived here, I have never once seen a highway patrol officer pull over a car over, for reckless driving. Not once. They just do not care.
