Not long after take off, one of the engines emitted a loud ‘fiery noise’ that caused the plane to stop climbing. The pilots had to shut down the engine and the aircraft entered into a controlled emergency landing back in Chiang Mai Airport.

All passengers were safe and no damage to the luggage was reported. The cause of the incident is being investigated.

Let me make a wild guess... poor maintenance?

Kudos to the pilots for saving the day.

I once had a similar experience...in a smaller plane.  I thanked the pilot for his good care in keeping us safe; to which he replied “ its my own ass I was worried about , not you in the back”

Drove down past the airport today and noticed a jet with big red covers on the 2 engines. Never seen before in CM. As I drove further I could see it was a Lion Air jet. Wonder if the guilty jet?
