A man tries on a full-face diving mask Tuesday at Tham Luang Nang Non.

CHIANG RAI — Rescue officials on Tuesday put out a call for special small-sized diving masks to rescue 12 boys and their coach who have been trapped in a cave for 10 days.

Emergency teams – working to rescue 12 boys and their football coach stuck in Tham Luang Nang Non for a tenth day – said they may either use a less flooded cave route or extract the boys by making them dive.

Somebody desperate for a photo op again perhaps?

Lol Thai... ?

A multi-million dollar international rescue effort with hundreds of both international and thai volunteers, experts, media on site, watched by the world at large, and they still need to embarrass themselves over a few thousand dollars of easily procurable masks.

But alas it's not Thailand without the loosely accounted donation, be it a road, a school computer, or this ?‍♂️ ... as much as I cringe at each gofundme.com i-didnt-have-insurance-and-drove-my-bike-drunk at least a thai version would lend some accountability to the collection and distribution of funds vs the ye olde envelope...

Amazing Thailand.

Officials ask money for masks, THIS IS THAILAND. How is this possible. PM Prayut said he wil give the boys a holliday in Pattaya. He, hello first GIVE money for the mask. This is more important. don't you think so !!!!! The must first get out !!!! before they can go on holliday.

It would cause a number of people to choke on their som tam.

Of course there are a number of billionaires in Thailand who would consider the cost as petty cash.

This does not cover the issue that many of the experts do not consider this the safest way to extract the stranded lads.

This is truly pathetic if true: there should be no need to 'put out a call for help with purchasing masks' at a time like this  - the generous Thai Government should immediately jump in, not needing to be asked. There is even Someone Else who would be more than happy to donate such masks, I am sure ...

Unbelievable!

The guy who decided to go this way should be taken to dive in a pitch dark environment in a confined space. I am an amateur diver (divemaster level) and every time I am in a dark(er) confined space my air consumption is doubled, or more, just due mild claustrophobia. A beginner diver also uses twice as much air as a confirmed one. So I would expect each one of these boys going through a 12 liter tank in about 20 minutes. So they'd better work out their margins of error.

Further, It's been mentioned in media stories that some of them can't swim.

From can't swim to using diving equipment in a location which total dark, where they know that cannot put their head up for 20 minutes or more is surely unthinkable and just a recipe for a panic lead disaster.

More thinking needed.

Not wise even if well intended. The junta is known to make something out of nothing to legally charge him and possible ban the party or worse delay election as they will deem that a security threat. Just don't give the junta any more excuse.

Well...are they asking for donations of small masks or donations to BUY small masks?

As I understand it, masks this small aren't easily acquired and they need people to donate small masks if they have them.

If that isn't the case I should just get hold of the company that manufactures the masks and place an express order - money, in this case, should be a non-issue.

Well they better start thinking fast as more rain is forecast,

they would most likely find 12 small masks quickly with

the Worldwide media attention this has been having, not

a time to mull and probe, get it done.its a priority.

I can't think of a better way for one to dispose of a dead friend's luxury timepiece.

Why not just charge the parents 5 times the going rate. Thats what would happen if the kids were farang plus a cave entry fee

I remember a year or more back, students reading George Orwell's 1984 in public while eating sandwiches, to make a political point. They were charged with "eating a sandwich with criminal intent".

I aplaude everything they have done but give me a break.

The US and Brits cannot supply this?

Comeon......

I will give NOTHING....

Really!, call Thai embassy in Singapore, tell them to go buy masks, jump on a plane to Bkk, pick them up at airport, military hotshot to caves.

Or ask for "donations" I know what I would be doing! ?

''never let a dramatic rescue with ( a happy ending) go to waste'' this circus has just begun, and many want a piece of this pie, combined with shamlessness, it could get ugly..

"So I would expect each one of these boys going through a 12 liter tank in about 20 minutes."

Let's say 12 lit times 200 atm pressure = 2400 lit of air,  they have about 2.000 lit of air to breathe. Consumption of approx. 30 lit/min = 65 min, 1 hour. More or less on the surface.

Air supply should not be a problem as there can many tanks be deposited on their way out.

The boy wouldn't even need to carry a tank of their own. They could breath from a regulator on an extended octopus. And they don't have to dive deep, mostly just a bit under the surface. Two professional seals with every boy should minimize the risk. The youngsters just

have to learn to breathe compressed air under water until they feel confident enough to trust their helpers. As to my knowledge there are only three places where they have to dive through.

My guess: They will be out of the cave soon. Need to eat and get strong again. They are young and well trained footballers, they must be in a general good condition.

Good luck to all of them.

Dunno about bomb detection, but it would 'undermine' some of the bullshit that's bound to appear once government ministers begin waffling about the situation.
