Seen some of the Y/T night vision footage of it on night operations in Afghanistan pounding targets with the insurgents running around below like headless chickens unaware of where the fire's coming from .. and by the time they've worked it out .. its too late ..

It started life as a 1938 DKW-NZ350, and ended up in Russia, with a lot of IZH350 parts.  The IZH350 being a Russian built bike using DKW plans they "acquired" in 1945.  It was customised by a Russian aerospace engineer.

 

The engine is one of these:

An original DKW-NZ350

They were one of the 4 German manufacturers that merged in 1932 to form Auto Union GmbH, the other three being Horch, Wanderer and Audi.  These days they live on only as one of the 4 Audi rings - one for each of the original companies.

Schüttoff H500 ohv ..

Schüttoff were another manufacturer who linked up with DKW .. their 2 stroke dev' was well advanced and they supplied the engine for the stroker Schü' at the bottom ..

When I was young, a guy across the street had that or maybe a very similar enduro model.  He putted around the yard at very low rpm/speed for ages.  Once he hit the break-in mileage, it was wide open throttle thereafter.

We all like an engine and here's one that might be of interest I've found after stumbling on it researching some other work .. 

RR Crecy .. 26 ltr V12 aero lump .. 

What sets this apart is that it is a 2 stroke .. Under dev' from 1940 it was seen as a possible step engine between the Merlin and later Griffon .. Direct fuel injection , reciprocating sleeve valve's and variable vortex superchargers this produced in later version's 2600 hp which was 400 more than a Merlin of the time .. Said to be incredibly loud when running another unexpected bonus was the thrust produced by the exhausts that were coupled to turbo charger's on a couple of test units though its not clear what they were used for .. When it was finally cancelled late 1945 with the rush to jet engines it had become the most advanced 2 stroke Aero lump made 

with hugely impressive power figures compared to comparable 4 stroke units .. 

None are believed to exist now and good pic's are few and far between but there are some decent tech' write up's out there if ye'z are interested ..

Another unusual aircraft engine, the Napier Nomad.  It's most striking feature is the dual, counter rotating propellers, but what went on underneath is just as strange, as each propeller is driven by an independent process.  The rear one is turned by a V12 2-stroke turbo-supercharged diesel, and the front by a turboprop style compressor and turbine, with a combined output of 3000 hp.  The second incarnation used both processes to drive a single prop, and achieved 3,500 hp, however, like the Crecy above, it was overtaken by newer technology, in this case full turboprop engines, before it ever really got out of prototype stage.  Still an impressive piece of engineering though.

Schematic diagram of layout of Nomad 1 and 2 .. Hugely impressive and equally complicated engine that like all the other big piston aero engines found thereselves almost obsolete overnight with the jet engine advancement .. 

Avro Lincoln used as test bed for Nomad 1 ..

Not that Germany was averse to building huge Aero engines ..

Daimler Benz X24 46 ltr .. Essentially two of their V12's stuck together .. rated at 2500 hp ( less than the Crecy but near twice its capacity ) it was one of the engines in development to power the Amerika Bomber project in which they dreamed of flying the Atlantic , bomb N Y then fly back .. Numerous config's were looked at including 6 and 8 piston engined proposal's until they gave up on the idea .. a super futuristic one with jet engines by the Horton company never went past mock up stage .. But look at the similarities between it and the B2 stealth bomber made by the U S decades later ..

In the annex of the Science Museum in the UK which I once visited for work there is/was a "W" engine for a long range German bomber. The idea being that banks of cylinders could be shut down to save fuel.

The fizzer is an early one with the guillotine front plate .. And the SS is that lovely crystal blue they used to come in ..

Another small Italian manufacturer.  Motobi was established in 1949 by one of the Benelli brothers, setting up a factory next door to them in Pesaro following a family argument.  In 1962 it was acquired by Benelli, who stopped using the name in 1977.  The trademark was bought by an Austrian company in 2010 and now makes scooters, while providing support to the JiR Moto 2 team.

However, i posted this very same bike ooh maybe a hundred odd pages ago, and some other duplicates of other bikes have crept in also.

Stuff i've seen before, on this thread is not new anymore, the thread has got so big, we have forgotten what has been posted before.

The stuff i post is off my computer files from stuff i've seen, liked and kept.

I don't have the time, nor inclination to trawl the net for new stuff to post on here, it is why i don't post much on this thread anymore.

This is not in any way a criticism, just pointing some facts out.

Having said that, i still look on here most days and enjoy yours and others posting interesting stuff.

Carry on the good work guys!

Blimey my memory is getting as bad as my mince pies Guzz' I didn't realise you had put her up before but like you say 160 odd pages now is a long way to go looking back .. 

The standard throughout though I think is pretty high and reflects the passion we all have for motorcycles .. Not to mention informative as I've learned stuff off here that I wasn't aware of and discovered bikes that I'd never heard of before .. and we all seem to share a love of things mechanical so have mentioned to fit planes , trains and automobiles in as well .. I'll bet VocalNeal never thought it would run this long when he kicked it off .. I echo you're sentiments Guzz' keep up the good work men .. 

Ring ding ding .. Kawasaki eateth thine heart out .. Early 60's EMC Excelsior 3 cyl stroker .. Looks like about 350/400cc .. Love to have a blast on that .. 

Odd Bantam 250 .. stated as Anzani and looks water cooled .. almost a bit Scott'ish .. Love to have a go on that also ..

In 1949 Giuseppe Benelli quit the eponymous, Pesaro, Italy-based motorcycle dynasty after a disagreement with his five brothers. He quickly set up a new company, “Moto B Pesaro,” in competition with Benelli. His first motorcycles were 2-stroke horizontal singles of 98cc, 114cc and 123cc, but he also built a horizontal parallel twin 200.

Echoing the innovative German-built Imme R100 motorcycle of 1949, Motobi shaped the engine into a smooth “egg” shape, giving it a characteristic styling that Aermacchi would later emulate. The most famous Motobi (as the company became known after 1954) motorcycles were the Catria 125cc and 175cc 4-strokes singles introduced in 1955.

The singles earned a reputation for lively performance, smooth running and a lack of mechanical noise. The 175 proved successful in competition, too, winning nine Italian road race championships in its class between 1959 and 1972.

After Giuseppe died in 1957, his two sons, Luigi and Marco, took over the business and eventually repaired the family split. Benelli and Motobi merged in 1963, although the two marques maintained their separate identities until the mid-1970s.

The firearms manufacturer Beretta is apparently run by two factions in the family.  One of their plants in Maryland, USA has separate areas for them, at least office-wise.  They divided up the various models/brand names.

Sunday the 15th is Battle of Britain day .. The day the Luftwaffe threw everything at the S E and London and the day Churchill is said to have asked Sir Keith Park while at the Uxbridge command bunker " how many reserves do we have " to which Park tersely replied " there are none " ( though that wasn't strictly the case as Park expanded on later ) .. But as history was to show that was the last chuck of the Luftwaffe dice trying to beat the RAF .. So it is in keeping we remember Beatrice Shilling or Tilly to the girls who came up with the remedy that overcome a severe impediment the Spit's and Hurry's had against the ME109 namely carburettor flooding in a steep dive caused by neg' G that manifested itself as coughing and spluttering when pulling up and worse case the engine cutting out .. It is said the Luftwaffe sussed that there was a problem that affected the Brit' planes in steep dives and 109' pilots ( ME 109 was fuel injected so never suffered with these issues ) used it as a tactic to shake off chasing Spit's .. until Tilly came up with little more than a thimble with a hole in the end to restrict over fuel into the float chamber under neg conditions .. A super successful mod' until pressurised carb's were fitted and once proven teams were despatched to all airfields operating Spit's and Hurry's to carry out the mod' that earned the nickname Miss Shillings Orifice .. 

Out of Waterlooville Hampshire Tilly was into all things mechanical and owned a motorcycle at 14 and entered employment with an electrical company who sponsored her for a degree in electrical engineering and a year later a Masters of science degree in Mechanical engineering also .. In the mid 1930's after working as a research assistant at Brum' Uni' she was recruited by the RAE the R & D arm of the RAF staying there until retirement late 60's working on numerous projects associated with the Merlin for which she was awarded an OBE .. But our Till' loved her bikes also and was one of only 3 women to lap Brooklands at 106 mph for which she was awarded a goldstar .. Known for fettling and modding her own machinery in the garage of their house with hubby George a bomber pilot it is said when he proposed to her she said she would only accept once he had won a goldstar for lapping Brooklands on a bike as she had done .. After WW2 they competed on 4 wheels more than 2 but retained a strong affection for motorcycles .. What a girl they don't make 'em like her now ..

If you've ever heard one of the early 180 crank 1000's and early 1200's just off idle, one of the most joyous motorcycle sounds of all time.

The later 120 crank motors were smoothed out, never the same as the rough round the edges early motors.

 

For some reason, earlier 955i Speed Triples (120 degree crank) have that wonderful off idle lope, that the later longer stroke 1050's cant replicate

Indeed t'is a joyous sound .. And as I recall the original Jota from the mid 70's was the fastest bike money could buy at the time .. and you needed a lot of dough .. It is a point of variation amongst engine makers the relative merits of 180° over 120° crankpin spacing in 3 cyl lumps with most seeming to go with 120 for balance reasons though interestingly 3 bangers that are all the rage in the city car market now with VW , GM and Ford amongst a few offering 1.0 ltr 3 potter's that bang out 80/85 hp normally aspirated and upto 115/125 with a turbo all have balance shaft/weight arrangments .. Porsche's ubiquitous flat 6 is essentially 2 three cyls mated base to base and sharing a common 120° degree crank but being a boxer is inherently well balanced .. And a porker 6 full bore and I mean pedal to the metal has an induction roar and exhaust note up there with the very best .. 

On the subject of exhausts and noise beneath is a screen grab of an article about a guy called Richard Franklyn who is trying to build a supercharged V6 1000 2 stroke using a lot of the ideas used in the RR Crecy put up a few pages back .. In the last para he states the Crecy could be heard for 5 miles when getting caned on a test bed .. As glorious as the Merlin sounds in a Spit' why oh why could they have not put a Crecy in one just for test purposes and that noise alone .. Hohum ..

Better pic of a Kettenkraftrad .. 

One of these turned up in a barn in France a few yrs back having lain undiscovered for over 70 yrs .. Minus it's front tyre and tracks and in a 70 yr old condition it still made €5000 at auction .. The military vehicle buffs love these the same as the Kubelwagen the military version thing of the Beetle ..

I'll second that.  This is a highly informative thread, and, apart from the very rare troll visiting every so often, has got to be one of the most pleasant on TV, especially given its length.  I can't recall a post ever being removed, or any input needed from the mods, even though the content doesn't always follow what it says on the lid.  I think anyone with a love for motorcycles also has one for well engineered machinery of any type, especially if it makes a lot of noise, and/or flames, making this the perfect thread for sharing such beasts.  Like yourself, I've learned a lot of stuff here, not only from what others post, but also when I see a nice bike/plane/aero engine/etc on the internet and look up some info on it before posting a picture.  I'll see your echo and raise you one.  Keep it up.
