Administrative officers, soldiers, police and land officers in Krabi have conducted raids in an effort to follow up recent crackdowns on illegal hostels around Krabi.

Krabi Vice Governor Apinan Pueakpong said, "In yesterday's raids (July 17) we found more than 10 illegal hostels which have modified the buildings without a permit and are operating without proper licenses. Some of these 'hostels' have also been encroaching on footpaths out front. These hostels have been temporarily shut down until they can produce the correct documentation. "

Sarat Kiewkong, Director of the Public Work Division, Krabi City Municipality said, "We have warned these hotels to modify their buildings according to the local codes and laws before, but they did not do so."

This seems to be an accepted practice nationwide... Are they saying this is actually illegal ?

I wonder how many travel blogs are buzzing with advice to avoid Thailand because there's a pretty good chance you'll get kicked out of that room you spent hours researching, and you'll end up spending 3x your budget moving to a dump that you wouldn't have booked on purpose if it was the last room on the planet?

I agree with cracking down on illegal practices.  But closing them down inconveniences a lot more people than the owner/ operator.  People who then go on to badmouth Thailand to everyone who will listen or click on their video.

It just seems like a great way to shoot yourself in the butt if you're trying to attract tourists, especially in the wake of tragedies like the recent ones.

Make no mistake.

Illegal hostels , as is mentioned , rarely comply with city regulations.

Thats why they are illegal - they choose not to comply with what is improving health regulations across Thailand... laws that provide minimums required for safety and hygiene.

When they dont comply , they spend less money.

And , with less overheads , they  can compete on the Hostel market as being the cheapest.

Left unchecked , they can bring whole villiages/towns into disrepute , and they can end up dragging all the local accommodation margins down.

Read a Lonely Planet or Rough Guide that says  a town is a dump with bad accommodation options , and you stay on the bus !

I can only see positive  outcomes for those towns willing to bite the bullet and see that Their town will at least maintain minimum standards .

If illegal aliens are found to be staying in illegal hostels, do they cancel each other out?

Yes, don’t worry, mate. Soon, Thailand will be just like whichever country you came from!
