You can rent a room in BKK for 3000baht and if you cannot live on 1000baht a day you need lessons in money management or pull your head in and live more modestly.

Walking and riding around on a bicycle gives you good health, even in this heat ,

A normal BMI (body mass index)  is important , especially when you get older.

I see too many obese farangs here in Thailand over 50 , they look 10-20 years older than their age  and will probably not be around after 75 .

It's never too late to start changing your lifestyle.

If you want to live a full life live in danger.  And I'm 76.

OK  I have a bit more then Bt45,000 p/m to live on but I have difficulty spending that much...Bt9,000 for a nice town house incl Foxtel (Aussie football free) and 3bb internet.  Nice live in house keeper and friend and I do give her money all up rent, electricity and my live in friend= Bt20,000p/m.

My little lady is a very good Karaoke singer and organises the music at a fair size hotel each night and is well paid by Thai wage standards (she is happy, bugger all for Australians)).  Usually works till 2/3/4 AM goes to bed when she gets home, I'm fast a sleep always?  Get up at 7 am I tell her go back to bed she just 5555 (ha,ha,ha).

Does all the house work till 9am spends next 3/4 hours every day practising her Karaoke goes back to bed for 4 hours and later goes to work by 7 pm and very happy.  Has a wonderful collection of English/US songs and speaks quite good English, taught herself English by watching movies on TV (smart girl) .   I enjoy her company the hotel is not far away. It's hard to take her out for dinner as she works 7 days and the hotel she works at includes a meal when required but we do go for lunch often.  I keep the fridge stocked with 7/11 and other food.  My house keeper is really a non drinker but in her field patrons often want to buy her a drink, alcohol effect her ability to sing well ( I know it does me too), lots of evidence there?  She makes sure her drinks are very low in alcohol.

I like to sing as I did often in a band in my younger days and later in various choirs  and even if I say so myself I can still russell up a tune or 2 as long as the range is not to high or to low I can still sing in tune. Like all singing you must practice before performing.   I became apparent when I frequented a restaurant where she previously worked if she could get a silly old farang like me to get up and sing with her, sometimes duetts and sometimes solo and make a bit of a fool of myself then others would also have a go thus turning the night into a real party, some times once the ice is broken well the river really starts to flow.

I do hire as Honda Click bike for Bt2500p/m perhaps I'll buy one soon.  Can get a very good second hand one for Bt25,000 or the cost of 12 months rental. My song bird house keeper has her own bike.  It's unbelievable how much it did not cost me to put back to full working order. (she had fallen off a few times in the past)   Now at this stage I have spent Bt22,500 p/m which I now have Bt22,500 left over to buy some food and have a few drinks at the at the Bus Stop Soi in Cha-am,  like the Blue Bar or The Lounge Bar and Restaurant, the Cha Cha Bar, The Don't Know Bar, The silver Bar, The U Turn Bar  or "Aussie Tony's Bar "The Red Lion, who often has Aussie football on etc, etc.  I am no angle, I like a drink in company but very rarely have a drink on my own.

So all in all I really have no Idea why in the last 43 pages or so why anyone could complain about the difficulties of living on Bt45,000P/M in Thailand.  to me it's PARADISE.

Earnings are just a number, and as long as you have enough, you're good. The best things in life are free anyway.

Obese, 5555 One thing I discovered is that every time I come to Thailand or Cambodia, I lose between 22 lbs. - 25 lbs, in weight by about the end of the second month. And if I stay for four months, I drop about another 15 lbs. Funny thing.....I’m not consciously dieting. 67 years old, feel a lot younger and with more energy when I’m thinner. I go back to Canada and put all the weight back on and feel like crap again, and can’t wait for my next trip to LoS and/or Cambodia.

Anyone else experience this ? ?    It can’t be just me. And no, I haven’t had traveller’s diarrhea for many, many years. (Dukoral might have something to do with no traveller’s diarrhea.)

At the beginning of my stay here I had the same experience. Probably the high temperatures boost your metabolism paired with the heat that decrease your appetite.
But for long term after two years I slowly gained weight and now have to be careful what I eat.
I would reckon the sugar intake is generally higher here if you eat normal.

Yet pay for a farang English teacher is 30,000 baht per month.

20 years ago the pay was the same - or more.

No wonder Thailand will remain in the 'middle-income trap' for the forseeable future.

LBJ.jpg

My income varies quite a lot from month to month, but I am chuffed to NAAFI Break (as are Best Beloved and Little Miss JAG) if I top 45K!

The Thai wife and I are living quite well in northern Thailand with expenses averaging 30,000 baht a month (including expensive medical insurance for me). Once we've moved into the home we are building and stop paying rent I expect we'll drop down to 25,000 per month.

What part of he up country your located ?

I don't know how old the participants in this thread are but some have said that there are working and in some parts of Thailand, such as Chiang Mai, there are a lot of young farangs supporting themselves by doing things like teaching English or digital nomading.

Yea but come pension time they will be in serious do-do. I wanted to come live here before 50 but resisted it fanatically, for visa reasons, but mostly financial. Got to 50 and was here within 2 months. Could live on 45k easily but 100k is easier if you like wine, women and song as I do. But, to be fair, I rarely spend over that 45k figure a month and the rest goes on my many holidays throughout the year.

I didn't mean to say that I recommended working age people living here if they are only going to be in the able to scrape by, just that many do. Moving to Thailand younger than 50 might be a good thing for mid-career corporate expats or offshore oil workers who get a Western salary plus living expenses but if you're going to be working for local wages it doesn't make a lot of sense economically.

But it does make sense to many western Incels.

I'd rather have 10 years of plentiful sex and die, than live to 100 with none at all.

Which is effectively (and unfortunately) how a lot of western men are forced to live these days.

Totally different for a woman who can have casual sex any time she wants, no matter how she looks, or what her income.

Castration would be a better plan than that.

Huh?

I don't understand the point of this article. It is widely known that schools want teachers around 30k-40k.  In fact, European teachers can earn something around 35K and natives 40-45K.

What are you speaking about here?

You can have both. If you live a healthy life and carefully choose what you eat and drink you can have sex when you turn 90 , no erection problems. I read a story about a 92 year old who had weekly sex .

I said the same thing two months ago...let alone 40K puts you in the top 20% of households in BKK.

ANd if they can pull it off..they prefer Filipinoes at 20K, with an African or two.

Sure, if you stay here.

I think he was referring to western countries and western women.

I still keep contact with many of my friends in the US and they never have sex. Maybe twice a year.

Western women use it as a major control issue.  It is sick and disgusting.

They cannot get a divorce because it will cost too much.  So, they turn to the internet for release probably the same girls I am actually seeing in person. ?

Most western women I believe create a depressing lifestyle in later life.

I will remain here thanks.

My parents are still in love after 62 years, and divorce never crossed their minds, but they are rare exceptions, and most of my friends in their 50s and 60s are in the situation as you describe.  And quite a few would express their disgust at someone banging a bar girl, even though their sins from 30 years ago are costing them 5000+USD per month..and not a kiss.

Where ?

Join the Immigration Police....good money to be made there by racketing the poor retired farangs in Thailand.

Are any of us posters here in our prime years?

I'm just eking out my last few days while waiting for death.

About three weeks ago, I spent 10 days in hospital when things went very wrong. It cost my insurance a lot of money to keep me alive. If it was 50 years ago, I would have died at the age of 49. It was for me, the biggest wake-up call I have had and it made me realize how important your health is. I may not live a grand life, and I may not be earning big dollars, but as long as I can pay my insurance yearly, have 30,000 to 40,000 a month to spend on the basics and like one other poster noted, keep a rather large nest egg in Australia at the same level for the years ahead to come, I will be more than happy. I am very happy to be alive today. I am now living on borrowed time due to medical advancement, nothing else. How great is that?

I pay 7,000 THB a month for a specious condo in Pinklao.

I spend 10,000 for food and petrol for my Motorbike

Add entertainment 13,000.

It sums up to 20k. And by no means I am poor.

Er, last time I used my fingers, 7,000 + 10,000 + 13,000 came to 30,000 baht, not 20k!  ????
