Parts of slaughtered Muntjac seized

Officials at the Nong Khai wildlife checkpoint seized four body parts weighing 6.5 kilograms belonging to a slaughtered Muntjac – a wildlife animal protected under Thai law – in the Rattana Wapi district of Nong Khai province on Sunday morning.

 

 

Checkpoint head Prasit Phutthabucha led police and related officials to inspect the Thai-Lao border market in Ban Peng Jan, Tambon Phon Phaeng, at around 8am when they were alerted to a basket from which blood was dripping. The basket had been left unattended near the Mekong riverside area of the market. 

 

 

When officials inspected the basket, they found parts of the slaughtered muntjac. The items have been taken away for investigation.

Another interesting fact about the Muntjac;

 

Indian Muntjac have just six chromosomes in the females, and seven in the males.

Fruit flies, on the other hand, have eight chromosomes.

 

The least amount of chromosomes of any mammal !!

I don't think so.

These deer are a popular target for poor mans poaching.

I have seen a dead animal myself at a nearby construction workers camp.

I have photos of the cut off head but better refrain from putting them here.
