All 57 people involved in an accident in Pak Thong Chai, Korat have survived.

Police and rescue services found a Rayong to Loei air-conditioned bus on its side crushing an Isuzu pick-up in the ditch.

Some 55 passengers were awaiting the rescue services by the side of the road on Route 304 Pak Thong Chai to Kabinburi heading in the direction of Nakorn Ratchasima. The two occupants of the pick-up were unhurt after clambering out.

Twenty three people suffered minor injuries on the bus and were taken to Pak Thong Chai hospital.

Bus driver Karn, 36, said that the pick-up tried to pass him but failed to complete the maneuver and he hit the back of it. The collision propelled everyone into the ditch.

Somjit, 49, said he was with his wife and had been to see their child in Chonburi. He confirmed what had happened.

Both drivers tested negative for alcohol.

Police intend to interview both drivers again and passengers to get to the truth of the matter.

Sanook called it a miracle that no one was seriously hurt or killed on this occasion.

No marks on the back of the pick up.

However, the suite of pictures from Sanook indicate that both vehicles were headed in the same direction  on a dual-carriageway.

Correct. Flat and straight.

I have driven this stretch a couple of times.

Rayong - Loei, line 824.

One of the very few coaches I have used over the years (goes through our district town).

Doubledecker!

If the bus hit the back of the pickup, then the pickup must have completed the maneuver!  I don't suppose the bus driver thought about slowing down just a little bit, instead of pushing the pedal to the metal In accordance with Thai Culture.

For me, the overtaking maneuver is complete when you put a safe distance between you and whatever you are overtaking before using your left turn indicator and then pulling in.

In a taxi the other day - he was driving smoothly but in a hurry.  He often changed lanes whilst I was looking at the front of the car he was overtaking but luckily no aggravated horns or machete's showed up.  In the case of one of those too high buses that might have been built in a back yard, it may have been too top heavy (as too many here are) and the bus driver was not able to control it when violently trying to turn away from the pickup.  Worst case scenario, IMHO, if you definitely cannot avoid hitting someone that does that, then just keep your wheels straight ahead and bring the vehicle to a stop as quickly as possible - no rollover.  But each incident is different and hopefully there is a bus driver behind the wheel that has had at least a minimum of training..
