So, after a few months back in the UK deciding to buy a Honda HRV, once I arrived in Thailand I didn’t!!!!! I was very close to buying a Toyota CH-R due to the technology and better offers given by Toyota compared to Honda. However, in the end I went over budget and bought a new Auto 3.0L, Iconic, 2 Wheel Drive Isuzu Mu-X.

My first impressions of it our good. However, it is the first SUV I have bought so I cannot make any direct comparisons. The technology offered with the car is very good and the price compared to similar class vehicles (Everest, CX-5, Pajero, Trailblazer, etc) seems great – 1.389,000Baht. I didn’t think the DVD player was necessary, but all the other stuff like, electric closing side mirrors, rear view camera, front recording camera, Bluetooth, GPS, live TV, Number of USB ports, etc are excellent.

The drive is nice and since I changed the wheels on the car from the 18in to 20inch I am generally pleased with the look. However I still the Fortuner looks better. The 5 year/100,000km is also good, as is the 6 free services (well labour only).

The only really annoying issue is the strange red licence plate rule!!!!! Does anyone have any realistic timelines for how long this will take to get the proper plates? The dealership thinks it will be around 30 days.

Also does anyone know how to use the wireless HDMI connection? My information books are in Thai and it will be another few weeks for I get  the English ones.

Any info as always will be appreciated.

Thanks JS

Giddyup, they are annoying due to the restriction of supposedly not being able to drive between 6pm and 6am and the fact that you are allowed to dive in the province that the car is registered to.

The red plates are legal for 30 days only...

with red plates you get a log book to record your out of province trips, so you can drive every where.

Red Plates are only strange outside Thailand.....

Some people in Thailand love the new car look with red plates.

Dealers can drag out issuing the normal plates if it suits them.

Ultimately it is not a big deal, the police do not check often (like most other rules) and the fines are not huge.

Thanks Jitar, I just at don't understand why I would have to stay driving within the province I bought the car from for a month. However, it's the rules, so I will get on with it I guess.

You always stick to the rules?

I’ve had 6 new vehicles here and did not know about the red plate restrictions for the first 3 or 4.

Don’t worry about it, if your married, get your wife to keep the book up to date, if not, fogetaboutit..

If you get pulled over without a Thai in the car, just pretend like you don’t know what they are talking about. They’ll get frustrated after a while and let you go.

I think you’ll love it. I had four Isuzu pickups and they were all great.

I’d have gotten the MuX but the wife liked the Fortuner better. I agree the Fortuner is better looking, but the Isuzu I thought was more comfortable, albeit a little spartan.

Isuzu service seems to be much cheaper than Toyota too. Did not know about the 5 year warranty, but that’s a big plus.

Get ready for all the guys that come on here talking smack about the MuX..

Both Toyota and Isuzu have a pretty good reputation for reliability.

It's very rare to see an Isuzu in Australia, can anyone explain why?

Isuzu trucks are fairly popular for medium sizes.

The pickups have only been sold as Isuzu for 10 years.  Before that they were sold as Holden Rodeo's.

Isuzu don't have as many dealers as Toyota and most of the Isuzu dealers are focused on trucks, not utes.

Some of the pick up buyers are probably more familiar with the car dealers like Toyota and Ford etc who also sell pickups.

Live TV wow when do you watch that when you are driving?
When driving only the screen in the rear shows the live TV, not the front screen for obvious reasons.

The red plate restriction is a hangover from the days when trucks had road hour restrictions as well

as only in the 2 left lanes. Since the Junta took over the police do not care about anything.

When I first bought my new truck, I drove after 6pm, and also into other provinces.

I knew about that law, but as I did not agree with it, I just broke it.:cheesy:

I wonder why you didn’t go for the Fortuner especially as you like the look. Being a newer model I understand the mechanics ,including the drive train would be more sophisticated. I drive a 3 year old Isuzu pickup ,which was competitive at the time (the Toyota was an ageing model) but the ride isn’t its best point and the MUx still has the same underpinnings. I imagine the fortuner would be superior.

Hi Nchuckle, I didn't by the Fortune as the equivalent model to my Mau-X would have cost me around 200,000b more. I couldn't justify the expense as I was already over budget.

Six months ago, I went from a three year old top-model 2WD Isuzu pickup to a top-model 2WD Fortuner and I do not think it significantly better than the Isuzu.

The Fortuner is nicer inside, but it is not more comfortable. It is quieter, but it does not seem to be more powerful, and the Isuzu seemed to get better mileage. The Fortuner rides a little better.

The Fortuner is better looking (ours is white with black roof, red/black leather interior) but had it not been for my wife I’d of gone with the MuX.

I do not like the Toyota navigation OS and liked Isuzu/Garmin OS much better. Also, map updates for the Isuzu were THB 600.

Isuzu service is much cheaper than Toyota.

The Toyota has automatic engine stop which bugs, not sure if the new Isuzu does or not.

I’ve certainly been very pleased with the dealer service of my Isuzu (also top of the range). I would like to update my sat nav too so was interested  to hear of that price (600). I thought they quoted me 1000 some time ago but maybe language issues (Phimai not much English spoken). I think they also said I would lose all my stored destinations which is the major issue for me. Can you confirm if that happened when you did it?

I had it updated in two vehicles several times over the years. I have been told I would lose the spot and did not, and I have been told I would not and did.

I think they used to lose them, but now they save them.

In any event, you can back your spots up with the Garmin online software, but I never did.

Losing the spots is not as big a deal as it seems...

Thank you. What is the procedure for backing up.? Is there a memory or SD card that can be removed from the unit and the information transferred to a Mac/desktop? Thanks

I never did it, but yea, it’s an SD type card you take out and plug in to your computer.
