Money withdrawal at bank counter

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I've heard that you could withdraw money at the bank counters directly to avoid the ATM fees. I've been to a few already, and they always tell me that you can only use the ATM at that branch.

Does anyone know a bank branch somewhere in Chiang Mai (close to Kad Suan Kaew / Nakornping Condo if possible) where you can withdraw money at the counter?

I only have foreign debit and credit cards.

Thank you !

Yeah - most Bangkok banks with money exchange....

Take your passport & Visa/MC debit card & tell them you want cash advance for whatever amount.....They'll run the card like a sale & give you the baht....

It's saved me 100's of trips to the atm over the years & about 60% of the atm costs......

Bkk bank does this for free but your home bank might charge you an international transaction fee - mine does.....

Good for up to 400,000B per time......

What ever you do, make sure you check with us home country bank to see what fees they charge for that.  Like Pgrahmm said, you may (I would say most likely) will be charged and you then have to calculate how much you take out at a time and figure out fees on which end are the cheapest in the long run.

The fellow across the street refuses to check with his bank, he is so sure there was no fee (didn't bank on line).  He would draw 10,000 baht (don't ask why so little) over the counter 5 or 6 times a month paying $9 each time in the U.S.  Never realized that 220 baht would have saved him a little.  Been doing this for the last 10 years.

On a related question, how can you be sure that when you do such a "cash advance" that they are not using DCC (dynamic currency conversion) which I understand can hit you up to 3 percent of the transaction?

I do think that the U.S. bank would also charge that amount, if he did an ATM withdrawal .

I withdraw my Aus pension by presenting my Australian Credit Union debit card and my passport.Max withdrawal for me is $A1,000 just over 20,000 baht per day, either by cash or using ATM,.They photocopy my passport face page and run my card through and I sign the slip and the photo copy. I get charged $5 back home, just over 100 baht and of course international conversion fee.

Always at Bangkok Bank, KSK (last week),Chiang Mai gate branch ,BB Tesco,Big C  and Mae Hia.

Been doing it this way for 12 years in CM. takes very little time, saves money and my home credit union often sends alerts about ATM scams throughout Asia

For those with USA residency Charles Schwab Bank offers no transaction fee ATM cards.  No foreign currency conversion charges and all ATM fees are rebated once a month.  Been using mine for a while with no problem.

USAA also offers something similar - for active and prior military.

Likewise State Farm and Fidelity Investments.

Citibank may not charge a foreign ATM fee (???) but they do not reimburse if the foreign bank charges a fee, do they?

And they don't charge a foreign currency transaction fee?

I have this card and checked in the past.

Perhaps things changed very recently?
